I have a old computer that runs on windows 98, but I can barely get it
to load up because its realy slow. Any suggestions on how to fix it or
what to do with it

If it's just a junker you keep around for kicks, try running ancient stuff on it. (at school I have a 450mhz AMD Gatewqay running Windows 3.11, Office 4, and Printmaster 4.

)

Or you could run Linux on it.

Or maybe reformat it to run Windows 2000 and see if Adobe or Microsoft or another company will let you beta-test. (sometimes they give you a free full version of the final release, and you're usually credited in the printed literature.

I have no idea, but some parts are fairly new like the moniter and other
stuff

Format and install Linux?

Get Ad-Aware SE and Spybot-Search & Destroy then run both and delete any adware/spyware found. Also run an anti-virus program to delete anything it finds. If your computer uses shared RAM for video and CPU, lower the amount used by the video.

It dosen't say on the tower what the proceser is, so I haven't a
clue

If you could open the case and post a pic of the motherboard I might be able to figure it out...

Or the BIOS setup usually shows the processor type/speed.

Try booting it in Safe Mode, and then run AdAware, Spybot, AVG Antivirus, and whatnot. And maybe set it to error-check/defragment the drive overnight.

This works in XP, but I can't remember if it works in 98.
Right click on My Computer, and click properties. Click on the Hardware tab and click Device Manager. Scroll down to Processors, and it will say under there.

ok this is dumb.....450Mhz is fast enouigh to run windows 98 and play some realitivly modern games with ease

and in windows 98 it does not have the processor speed in the device manager...lemme find a link for a free app thats'll tell you about your processor

I still don't know what the procesor is, but its working now and it can
play the sims (not the sims 2) but it still is fairly slow

P.S. thanks nos_slived for your " run it on safe mode and clean it up" thing

In Windows 98, check System in Control Panel. That should tell you the processor type, RAM, etc.
