You burn an ISO to a disk, yes... Some are small enough that you can even load it on floppies, and some can be loaded on flashdrives.

BTW: Use Linux!

Well as it seems unimus that you try linux. I'll list a few distros worth looking at

SuSE 9.x
DamnSmallLinux
Slax
Knoppix

Now 3 out of the 4 are primarally live. I'd say run them live first to be sure they will work well with your system. Then you can go on and do the install.

I hope this is helpful.

Unanimus? I think you forgot a couple letters, LOL.

I suggest trying SuSE 9.1 LiveCD. If you decide that you like SuSE, use 9.1 or 9.3, but NOT 9.2. Goto www.LinuxISO.org to download the distros and read some info. The LinuxISO forums have lots of members that can help you decide what to use.

If you feel really ambitious you could multi-boot it. 8)

Some suggestions:
-Linux
-Mac OS (Through BasiliskII)
-DOS/Windows 3
-CP/M :P

Linux can be difficult to set up initially, but after everything's said and done I have heard it's simple enough to use now.

If you aren't comfortable with the layout of linux, theres always Linspire, which is very similar to windows in terms of layout.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: SuSE!

You don't have to. Download SuSE 9.1 Personal from http://www.LinuxISO.org.

I personally didn't find Linux hard to install, especially with SuSE. The installer makes it easy to set your preferrences, and it includes a partition resizer/creater/eraser and a bootloader.
