Any Alternative for ev-680 audio/video jack?

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

Post by jeffslot »

Hi,

I'm doing the atari 2600 by hand proj from ben's book. However I think I accidently killed my audio/video jack when I was removing it from the board. Is there anywhere where I can get another one or something that would be an equivilant? thansk. Any help is really appreciated.

If all you ruined was the jack not the board then you can solder audio video and ground right to where the jack used to be :) .

Dave,

Thanks for getting back to me. I'm pretty sure that the board is OK, just the little piece on the back of the jack that the wires are supposed to attach to got broken. So If I understand you correctly (Remember I'm a newbie & this is my 1st project), you're saying connect wires to the spots on the board where the audio/video jack used to go & where ever else the other end of the wires are supposed to go (leaving the audio/video jack unused)? Thansk

Again.

All jacks do is continue to carry a signal from one place to the other, this allows them to be bypassed. You would find what the pins for the av jack were then solder a wire from the console's video out to the screen's video in spot, same goes for audio, then after that you may have to connect the screen's ground to the system's. To do this solder a wire from a system ground such as the metal grounding strip on the board or you could solder it to the negative pin for whatever powers it (there really is no negative power it just goes to ground anyway) then solder the other end to the ground spot from where the av plug used to be on the screen.

Dave,

I will try this tonight. Thanks you so much for the information. I had been really down that I ruined the project. Now, I have some hope again. THanks.

Um, let's see it's a 1/8" mini jack like a headphone jack right? The screen only has one speaker right?

Thanks again dave. The only other question I have now, before I resume building my portable (I've done a lot, but still have quite aways to go) is that I'm currently using floppy ribbon cable. I though I remember reading somewhere that I could solder two pieces together & wrap with electrical tape to create a longer piece. Is that right?

Thanks again.

Dave,

I'm going to be trying this as soon as the kids go to bed tonight, so just to make 100% sure. I'm going to use the picture above to bypass figure 4-12 from ben's book because I broke the audio / video jack. Thanks again.

Ok, just connect the system's audio and video out to the screens audio and video in pins shown above, also you will most likely have to connect a ground from the system to the tv. So just connect the tv ground pin to a sytem ground.

OK, I'm very embarrassed now. I now see from your picture where I have to connect the audio / video wires. However, I'm not sure what else they get connected to? Is it something on the 4 x 4 Atari board?

Thanks again.

Yep, you will get the video out, audio out and ground from the 4x4 Atari board. Just a sec let me wrangle up a pic :)
