Let me find you a setup, also I would highly suggest NOT getting wireless stuff, just an extra hassle. Also screen should be CRT right?, and finally, he is building this right?

*from a reliable source*
From http://www.newegg.com including shipping:

Antec Solution Series Super Mid Tower Case with 350W Power Supply: $69.00
Epox EP-9NPAJ motherboard, socket 939, nForce4 chipset: $95.00
AMD Athlon 64 3000+, Socket 939, "Venice" core, retail boxed (heatsink + cooling fan, 3 yr warranty): $154.00
NEC 3.5" floppy drive: $11
Sony 16X DVD-ROM drive: $27.00
NEC 3520A 16X DVD (also 4X DVD+R9) burner, with burning software: $47.00
Seagate 120 GB 7200 RPM, 8 MB cache hard drive (5 year warranty), Serial-ATA version: $86.00
Crucial PC3200 512 MB DIMM (8T): $49.00
GeForce 6600 GT, PCI-express video card, 128 MB memory: $160.00

$697.00

The motherboard already has a gigabit ethernet card built in, as well as a decent sound chip (Realtek 850 series), and the

For a monitor:

Viewsonic G70f, 17" flat screen CRT monitor: $154.00

All you now need to do is add the keyboard, mouse, speakers, and mouse pad. This system packs plenty of punch, and should perform wonderfully with HL2. This configuration is also a good performer in Doom 3, using moderate to aggressive settings.

Thus, for well under $900.00, you'll have a system that will be able to burn CD's and DVD's, as well as play today's and tomorrow's games very respectably. The GeForce 6600 GT is one of the best bang / buck GPU's out there.

Furthermore, with the PCI-express interface, you're better guarded against future obselescence.
