PSOne Screen Problems
I've been doing the small LED mod on a PSOne screen for a portable I'm working on and have a few questions. I've completed the mod and have plugged the screen into its AC power adaptor to test if the screen itself still works. Should I see anything at all? The unit is definitely getting power and sending 5v to the LED's, as the glue holding down the resistor I'm using has started to melt from the heat, and I've poked around with a multimeter checking voltages. I see nothing on the screen at all, however - not even a change that make me believe the LED's are doing something. Do I need some sort of video input (either from an actual PSOne, or the SNES?) for anything to display on the screen? I'd think with the LED's in there, it'd at least flicker or display a dark black for the empty screen. When I lean down close to the unit and listen, I hear a faint whistling noise. Maybe I've cracked the LCD? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
UPDATE: I took the screen casing apart again and checked out the situation. None of the LED leads are crossed or connecting to eachother. Also, the actual LCD glass is perfectly fine and it's all situated exactly as it needs to be. I put it back together, gave it power again, same problem. The screen does not even remotely light up, but just makes a very remote whistling noise. Any ideas?

Lemme make sure it's not the resistor - the resistor gets ungodly hot, even to the point of melting the hot glue holding it dow - within a few seconds. Also, all the negative leads are connected and soldered to ground. Positive leads obviously go to the resistor, which in turn goes to +5v.

Swapped out with a new resistor and I have the same problem. The new resistor gets so hot it's unbelievable and now I can even smell it burning somewhat. I've just it connected to the 5v on the 7805 so I'm not sure as to why this is happening...Regardless, after swapping out the resistor, I'm still having the same problem.

Well, I've turned off the lights in the room I'm working on and have noticed something. The screen now changes to a dark black when it receives power - something it wasn't doing before. The only problem is this resistor is about to explode and the volume/brightness buttons still do not display anything on the screen. So at the moment I'm just sort of scratching me head.

Completely just solved the problem. I checked the casing once more and noticed that one of the LED leads was rather cramped and was touching the metal casing. A removal and the casing and some crimping around the edges fixed this. And now my LED light have just burst into existance and everything seems to be working!

Sometimes Works
Well...the screen now works sometimes. A lot of the time it will flicker back and forth between white and black and make all sorts of odd patterns. Depending on where I put pressure on the screen, every once in awhile, it'll go back to normal (black) and I can see the volume/brightness stuff. I've no idea as to why this is happening. Has anybody else experienced anything similar?
Something is definetly touching something it is not supposed to, ground maybe? Shift the screen around and look for what things are and are not touching when the screen shows the white and black screen. Then once you find what two things causing the problem slap some electrical tape in between them.

Well, I don't even know if that's it, because the screen normally doesn't just go completely black OR white. It usually picks one and then randomly has lines moving across. I move the casing around and sometimes it corrects itself, or if I give pressure in the corner where there is no LED, the problem stops momentarily. Other times it just suddenly goes into epileptic seizures. I've taken it apart and looked carefully for connected leads and there aren't any - the LED's stay on the entire time, it's just that for some reason the screen looks like somebody's constantly running a marker all over it. Hard to describe, and just as frustrating to diagnose...

It's almost like I've cracked the LCD and it's just going haywire. But the thing I can't understand is that this totally corrects itself and works every once inawhile perfectly fine. Not to mention I've checked out the LCD glass and see no problems anywhere.
