power supply question

can a power supply give off power if its not connected to a motherboard?

So long as you have an on/off switch between the power supply and the mobo you shouldnt have any problem.

Most modern power supplies need a signal from the motherboard to turn on. If you can find one of the older AT ones with a switch on the back, you shouldn't have any trouble.

touch the green wire to ground for a second or so to turn on most PSUs

it works stick a paper clip in the the green and black pins
