C64DTV attempt

Post by Reaperman@home »

C64DTV--wow. I just heard about this item today (I'm a little behind the curve) and I'm already in love.

I've been doing searches on it all morning and there are pleanty of hand-holding tutorials out there for keyboards and diskdrives. The one for the expansion slot isn't up, but I'll find it.

I assume the built-in games are on rom "in the expansion slot". (if it were to have one). If I disconnect this (naturally, with a switch), I'm hoping to get this item working on it:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... eName=WD1V
SD reader

a little pricy, but VERY portable--no 10-15lb disk drives needed. And I should be able to carry pretty much everything ever written for C64 on one of the larger SD cards.

I got stalled designing the case on my last project, but since it's just a tv-game with a portable TV, I should be able to just use one of ben's 'kit' cases for $60-$90. Unless those aren't really for sale. I would have easily payed that last time just to have the project done...

C64 portable is a great idea, one easily worth sinking $250-$300 into...but I'd kill puppies for an Atari computer on a chip... XEGS would make a nice tv game.

I've got to also find a tiny PDA-size ps/2 (or adaptable to ps/2) keyboard.

I'm suprised they're still making stuff for the Commodore64. I know the Commodore One is in exsistence but an SD Card reader with pass through cart slot? Thats far beyond what I expected.

Reaperman, as for the C64DTV, have you seen the inside of one? Its not much like the Radica that rom chip is one the board and under some epoxy. Though you can get to the commmand line so I know you can get around the builtin games.
Also the Atari computer thing... Send Ben an email. He's worked on one. Its not done yet as he's looking for a 7" lcd that will run on 5v.

not only have I never seen the inside of one--I've never even seen one for sale. And I do tend to pay attention to the TV game section. This morning I checked 2 KB Toystores, and about half a dozen other retail outlets on the way. I'll probably get one off ebay unless the auction price climbs over QVC's $30 price. (which isn't likely)

I'm thinking that killing the built in games are easy. I'm sure I'll figure out which trace to score. I'm even sure there's a commodore fan out there with a tutorial for it. Looking at it, the project is so easy it's criminal. Why hadn't I heard of these until today?

As for the Atari computers, I loved them, I grew up with them, but there aren't enough Atari fans out there to make SD drives or compact TV-games...so after all these years, I may just have to switch over to the dark side. ...they're pretty much the same machine anyway... (here come the hate-PM's)

$70 for that SD drive isn't overly bad. It's compact, it works with current computers, and it's probably only twice what a disk drive costs after shipping on ebay. I'd like to track down a c64 cartridge so I can make sure the expansion port works before laying down $70, though... And I'll probably cut the passthrough off it to save space--I doubt I'll be needing it.

Looks like you have yet to find this site. http://www.orrville.net/dtvhacking/
They have info about everything from adding a serial port, to a 1541 disk drive or setting it up as a computer.

Also Spongebuell you hear what he's saying. Its a three man race now, lets see who will get it done first.

I could make one by the end of the day, but it would be pretty crappy and not play any extra games :P

Also, I realized that I probably won't make one for a while, since I'm busy on the arcade. Even then, I've never felt a huge devotion to the C64, as I barely used it before (at my uncle's when I was a little kid)

that's one fine site! looking for the expansion port guide now...

in their forums they have a compactflash storage solution--cheaper, but give me the commercial SD unit with its cute menu any day.
If they're using this, expansion ports must be possible.

oh, and I found them on toysrus.com for $19.99 or 2 for $30

Yes they are different. Fire button 1 is R and fire button 2 is L. Seriously look at some pic or buy one. As far as I know Spongebuell and I are the only ones on the forum that have a C64DTV.

While looking for a picture of Mac for an art final, I found this. A strange and disturbing coincidence.

The Performa 6xxx series had a subwoofer built in. (sounded kicka## when you cranked it.)

The powerbook 3xxx series (I think) had some nice speakers.

But the 20'th anniversary mac looks the most artistic, (besides the iMac and newer. :P)
