1. Don't rely on the flash alone. Flashbulbs are great, if your subject is non-glossy and at least 3 feet away. However, when taking closeup shots of PCBs and the like, it's best to place them on a towel or sheet on a table and illuminate them with a desk lamp.
2. Use Macro mode. Macro mode will help with making closeup shots clearer. Best of all, it's built into most digital cameras.
3. Keep things stable.. A lot of graininess comes from camera movement. Try resting your elbows on a table or mounting the camera on a tripod. If your camera has a self timer, use it to eliminate all movement from the picture. (and try not to take pictures with your non-writing hand, or with one hand while holding the object with the other, unless you have really good motor skills. I for one can't take pics that way. lol)
