yes! Now I can finally play all those atari carts I've been buying from thrift stores! I knew I'd be glad I bought them even though I've never owned an atari :P

Yeah, I read all about the Flashback 2.0 a few days ago. I was going to start a thread about it here, but I... well, I just didn't feel like it. :P

Edit: Also, how awesome would it be if the AOAC is NOT a CoB? (Chip on Board, but I'm sure you guys know that.) It won't be a DIP, but it might be some kind of SMD...

This is what I've been hoping for. Hey Gannon? It's time to design a PCB with the new chip...please? ^^

Also, I think the controller upgrades are possibly more than a few switches...

Those are modeled DIRECTLY off of Atari's analog controllers. Atari's analog controllers were potentiometers for the Axes, the resistance was used to determine direction if I remember correctly (I may be wrong, I can't remember where I heard this).

It is entirely possible that this more archaic (though GENIUS and innovative move on Atari's part!) has been replaced with a more solid state version (or an LED-based version).
Warranty-Voiding fun!

I just looked over the atari schematics, and it looks like they should be able to fit the chip in a 48 pin dip or tssop package. I doubt they will though.

The one think i always loved about the original Atari and Intellivision crew is most of them were software and hardware hackers. The stuff they designed was always easyly moddable, and easy as hell to work with. Im glad to see that this is still the case.
Hacking Heaven

The excitement doesn't end there though. Atari realized that because this is an actual 2600 under the hood, fans may want to run their original cartridges with it. Including a cartridge slot would have been a technical support nightmare however, with average joes calling wondering why this 20 something year old cartridge they just picked up at a garage sale won't work on the new console. Of course, we all know a little cleaning rubbing alcohol on the cartridge contacts will do wonders. But who wants to spend a fortune maintaining staff just to dole that bit of wisdom out? So they did the next best thing. Open it up (which will void your warranty) and you'll find it's all set up for people to hack in their own cartridge ports!

The only thing standing in your way (besides the cosmetic surgery you'll have to perform on the case cover), is Gizmo. No, not the furry little Gremlin from the 80's, but the MMU/Menu chip. According to Curt, "There are 2 convenient traces on the board leading to the Menu/Game chip to cut and disable with through board holes on either side of the trace points. What this means is you cut the traces, wire up a double throw/single pull toggle switch, and you can switch between a cart and built in game."
I was never too big into atari. I was more on an NES and Intellivision fan, but hell, I just might be making a 2600p!

And I wonder if the Falshback 2 will have paddle support. I'm also itching to know how they rebuilt it. Did they use the original TIA chip, or create something new? Is it a total AOAC with 6505 + TIA + Ram all in one? My g/f is probabbly going to wind up hating the classic consoles cause of all the time I spend on playin' with their hardware. Instead of doing "usefull" stuff, i spend most of my day cleaning my lab, then messing it working on my crap.
