Flush/Parallel or Perpendicular

I am wondering what the general consensus is on the positioning of the cartridge slot. Have you moved it into a 90 degree position, and is it worth it?... I really don't want to tear off the slot and then realize I have to re-wire the whole thing. Being as new to this as I am, I was interested in the opinions of the more more 'seasoned' members.

I would make it load like a gameboy. If you make it bottom-loading, it could slightly slip out causing the game to lock up on you. Its not a serious problem, but it is one that plauges all cart based consoles. Having it top loading will keep it from falling out.

If you cut a hole in the top of the case and have the cart slide down the wall as it goes in, it will further protect the cart from any mishaps. Put some side walls on as well and you should never have a problem (god bless old DVD cases and krazy glue!).

i have not built an N64p but from what ive heard it is a hassle so if this is your first i wouldn't recomend it

If you want to move the cart slot you should use IDE or SCSI cables, and if you can find them, use male/female cables. The female end easily connects to the cart slot, and if you have a male end, you bend the pins and slide them into the holes on the board. You can use individual wires, but they take longer.

Though moving the cart slot is somewhat painful, I think that it is more conveniant than leaving it perpendicular.

I'm on my first project, and I'm going to move mine. We had a SCSI cd drive on our old computer, so I have borrowed the cable out of that, which is perfect, as it is 50 pin, and the cartridge slot needs 48. There not very common any more though, but I'm gonna go and see if my old school has any kicking about they don't need. An alternative would be 2 34 pin floppy drive cables, and tear off what you don't need.

I think it's well worth moving it though, the cartridge slot will pull out no problem.

You're one lucky punk *o*. I might nip down the school later and see if the IT department will sell me a few, they still owe me a few favors (such as setting up a registartion system using swipe cards (I still can't beleive the IT department couldn't do it)).

there are short bits in these. some old 482 have them. go to computer repair shops they sometimes have some.

in my opinion if you want a clean backside in your portable go for relocated, you will be a bit thicker but you get a nicer overall product, if you are going for as small as possible (small form factor?) leave it because you save about a half inch that way
