Hi all,
I'm thinking of a feature I would like to implement on my snesp which involves switching what I feed from into my screen, where my snes board video feeds to, turning the power to the screen on and off, and regulating the whole thing with a three state switch.
I want to be able to feed external video into my ps1 screen using the original inputs, and I also want to be able to use the snes video out to plug into a tv.

Here is what I need for each switch state:

-State 1 (normal):
-snes video feeds to screen
-screen power on (obviously)
-external video feed to screen off

-State 2 (connect to TV):
-snes video feeds to video-out plug/external TV
-screen power off
-external video feed to screen off

-State 3 (view video from other device):
-screen power on
-external video feed to screen on
-snes video feeds to video-out plug/external TV (enables playing on tv even if ps1 screen is being used by other device... might be useful)

That's it. It seems like it should be possible and not too hard. I just don't know what electronics to buy since I'm not familiar with what is available. Any help is welcome.

I don't understand why you would use state 3, so could I get an example?

This cannont be done with a simple switch. It would have to use some sort of circuit that would multiply a single switch. If you got rid of state 3, I could probably work out a simple circuit using 2 CMOS 4011NAND GATES. It may even work using 3904NPN and 3906PNP transistors, but I have my doubts on that one. Other types of transistors would probably work, but you would need atleast 8 for a 2 state circuit.

You only need 2 switches for this.

For video out from SNES to TV, just make a "Y" adapter. Have one lead go to the Screen, the other to the Video Out jack. Since the screen will have a simple Power Switch, you dont need to select the video lead independantly. Nothing will go wrong if you hook 2 displays together in parallel.

Use another switch to switch from SNES video to Device Input. Basically what the switch will do is take the signal lead (middle pin on a RCA jack, or the color wire in an RCA Cable) and switch it from the SNES' video to a Jack of some sort.

You will need 2 kinds of switches. SPST (Single Post Single Throw). SPST is 2 leads. It just "breaks" the connection on one wire. Its a simple power switch.

The other is SPDT (Single Post Double Throw). SPDT has 3 wires. The middle wire is called Common. What happens when you flick the switch is the common lead switches from either the left wire, or the right wire. For a video selector, hook the screens video signal line up to the middle, hook SNES video signal line to the left. Hook a jack up to the right. Tie all the ground lines together. Now when you flip it left, you get SNES. Flip it right you get whatever is on the jacks input.

I got it. I actually figured it out during my math class :). What I need is a three state switch that sends current to three current-induced switches with multiple connections (so I can turn on and off multiple arrivals at once).

State 3 just basically lets you use the screen and the console at the same time with a tv. If you have two people playing snes and 1 person wanting to see a movie say from a portable dvd thing or whatever, the 1 person can use the smaller screen while the console players can use the tv. I know, it's a little extreme kind of situation but why not have it if it can be done.

Besides, you could use state 3 which will turn the screen on without using the console. So the screen is dependant on both the console power switch and the three state switch which makes it more flexible to use. But the console is only dependant on its own power switch.

I'm going to also allow my SNESp to have video out, and video in. But I'm only doing this with one 3 way (double pole) switch.

1) off
2) SNES and PSOne display on
3) only PSOne display on

For video in, put the switch on position 3 then connect an AV cable. For video out connect a cable to the AV out on either of the on positions (2 or 3).

I would use regular switches, just to keep things a little more simple. There are other kinds of switches besides SPST and SPDT. Theres Double Pole Single Throw, Double Pole Double throw, ans even triples. By "dasy chaining" them you can make "route" switches. However you decide to do it, good luck!

You do have a good idea here. If its got the ability allready, why not have the optopns.
