tritons big thread mega rant?

prepare for a long winded and possibly interesting read here are my thoughts, ideas and plans for the future as i see it. lots of good stuff in here i think.

1. future of portablizing?
it has been said around the forum and things lately that we are making a turn for the worst. i dont think this is true but there is a lot of things that, if done, could improve the community as a whole. i will list some of these ideas

A. a "portablization webring" include all of the portable related sites we can in a real webring or take it a step further and get...

B. portable mega site!
think about it. a website that is the ultimate resource of all things portable related, no longer would we ghave to use the crappy PHPbb search or scoure tons of different sites spread out across the net. the sitre could be a nexus of portable info holding all the commonly requested info about everything portable related and acs as the center of the portable world. it would take a lot of work to set up and run and could act as the heart of the community outside of benheck, i think it could also link to everything and be like the mail link in the webring or somthing like that.

C.the "noob" question
it has to be dealt with, no putting it aside. there has been problems with certian persons about the forum. i dont know exactly what sould be done about thes people, they are everywhere so we will probably jsut have to live with it

2.my plans for the future
i am not sure what the future will bring me, no one is. but it looks bright. i hope to continue working on portables and things on and off for a long time to come, because i loke doing it and like the people of the community. i have to admit i have not had much luck making portables but it is somthing i will allways have a little intrest in. i still love to desing these damnable things and will do more of that all the time, improving all the while! my site will be updated when i have actual news to put up on there and i hope to keep the site there as a guide and inspiration to other poeple who might like to make portables someday. i have other things to say probably , but i cant think of anything.

3.other stuff
not really anything i can think of. i have pretty much ranted myself out! i got most of what i wanted to say out so enjoy reading this stupid thing! or dont whatever, i dont care

to fix the n00b problem, have someone make a FAQ of standard knowledge for porabilization.

I could help make a "Mega-Portable site" . I know a lot about HTML and I am good at dreamweave. I don't think im good enought to make the whole site but I can help

Funny thing is that we are making websites in school so I decided to do a portables site

hell, this thread is mostly about the mega site! what i was thinking would be similar to doomportables but whatyou would call an "order of magnitude" bigger. what i envision (and i have thought about this a lot ofer the last few weeks and stuff, my mind is, not to brag or anything, a thing not to betrifeled with, why i say crap like that is beyond me but i like to jst THINK about crap and i do that a lot) is a site that is super organized, easy to navigate, and ful of interesting and informative things related to portables! here goes:

there will be sections dedicated to each individual system and the screens, each catagory could be subdevided to smaller catagories. EG have a "screens" catagory that has sections for psone, hip gear, pocket tv and general

there will be informative sections and entertainment sections EG: one part about making portables and one about designs/finished and pending systems, a place for people to show off what they have done and get ideas for what they plan to do. all of this could fit into a catagory or sub-catagory of the promary page

links. what is a site without links to similar sites? not much good if you ask me! the links idea could be taken different ways, a webring or somthink like that.

to make this site real would be a HUGE colaberative effort of every available person willing to help out. we would need people to gater information and organize it, people to lay out the site, people tp figure out the real stuff, hosting and all of that. we could start a new section of the forum dedicated to the gathering and everything of info for the new site, a place for people to submit pics and info on their projects, designs, ideas helpful info and all of that! we need a central place for all of this to go to other than what we have now, which is almost no organization of information at all and no good way to get that info to people who can use it or put it somewhere it can be found

i hope this helps and i would love to assist in this massive undertaking and hope you all feel the same way! with this we could truely become somthing great on the internet! PS, i am sorry if there are any typo's i suck at typing and dont have any patience to proofread this!

I know a way to avoid answering the noob question

have some kind of forum that will make you write "yes I can use a gamegear as a screen" and so on and so forth, than if they post a n00b question, you will be banned for 24 hours than if they do it again 2 days than 3 day for days....

if you think this site would be like doomportables you would be close. but my ideas for is are like i said an order of magnitude larger and more informative. doomportables is a great site and was one of the first portable related sites i saw,but it is dated. it gets updated almost never, lots of people cant get to it and other things like that. we need a place that has it all ya know. a place for the noobs to grow and learn and all that jazz. im just thnking ahead or attempting to. most of my ideas are half formed but solid. this thread has been in the works for me for a long time and bico, why stop there? why not just go all the way and have one place on the net where you can find everything and get to it all!! the noob forum would be a start but its at best a stopgap measure in my opinion

That could become a book in and of itself. Not trying to bring it down but the problem with a lot of new people is that they dont want to read a full or lengthy FAQ to find question.

As for the mega-site. The closest thing right now is a tie between Doomportables and Benheck. I say that as there is a lot of info on the message board that isnt on Doomportables.
What we need or should do is go through the old forum and find the useful info and add it to doomportables. We should to help Ben make an archive of the threads that have been inactive for a year+. We could then use those to add more info to Doomportables.

Stickies don't work! Take a look at how many questions in the Screen forum are answerred in the sticky at the top. And look how often people ask how to post pictures, when it says at the top of this page.

Which is why we need a "n00b FAQ" category above the book category. In it would be a basic primer, basic soldering, screen and power questions, and how to post pictures.

Oh, and a link to that AlbinoBlacksheep file that tells you to look before you post. (The one that is made to look like a middle-school hygiene filmstrip.)

MORE BY TRITON! the main thing i am thinking for this site is collaboration! we MUST work together, the first thing would be to get a basic format/template to work from and the go about designation who works on what and all of that. ther would be lots of areas you could help in

1setting up a template for frontpage/dreamweaver/html etc.
2colection and dumping info and pics
3organizing info into sections and catagories
4link trawing and finding info!
5people to work on the site itsself, layout the info on the pages consistantly and keeping all thje pages in a correct theme

i am also thinking that a new section on the forum, if this ideas is accepted and we actually do it, would help immensly in gathering info the rules would be..

NO anything that isnt directly related to the site, no "hey thats gay dont put that on the site" or ANY other crap like that!

YES if you made a portable, take pics! scan it whatever WE WANT TO SEE IT! if you do designs or doodles ANYTHING we would put it on this site, no stupid crap tho please, no 10 sec MSpaint garbage, be seious!

any guides FAQs tip lists or site links that would be helpful to a beginer would also be accepted, we want this to be the most useful portablizing ever!

its still like i said before bico! the page on the forum we do need, but why stop there? if we make this site, we wouldnt need a "noob faq" forum just one to gather up all the info for the site and kill it when we are done, or not kill it whatever

But I'm telling you, it wouldn't work. That is no different from having a sticky in the screens section.

The point is that they dont read the faqs, they answer the question, BS around a bit, and leave to never come back.
