New computer questions

I have a question about usb cables. When you plug a usb cable into the computer, the end you plug in is relativly flat. Then on the other end its kind of square, or another shape for things like mp3 players. Are there anyplugs that are flat on both ends? Cause thats the kind I need if they exist. Please someone answer this potentially stupid question.

You cant link up 2 pcs using a usb cable.

Just buy a crossover cable and make sure both pcs have a nic card and your all ready for networking!

They DO make usb extention cords... with a male type 1 (rectangular) plug on one end and a female type 1 connector on the other end.

Thats an extension cable, even if it was modded to link up 2 pcs together it wouldnt work because nothing supports it

But i dont think Mr. Cool will code a program to transfer files between 2 computers through a usb cable

Like i said, make sure both pcs have a nic card, buy a crossover cable and plug it into both pcs and your almost done just by doing that.

You need a USB-A/USB-A male/male connector.
What you are thinking of is USB-A/USB-B, which is often used for printers and cameras.

THAK YOU Nightmare! Finally an answer. Yes it was a printer cable. I just found out that crossover cables are only $6 so Ill get one of those. How can i find out if my computer has this nic card you speak of?

Using XP?

Right click "My Computer">>Properties>>"Hardware" tab>Device Manager

If you see NIC there, you got it.

Umm hello. This whole thread is about how i want to get xp on to my windows Me computer. Ill look for it there on my computer though. Is there any other way to tell?

You need it on both computers, so check on your other one.

Dang it! My windows xp computer has an nic card but my Me computer doesnt. Theyre in Network adapters, right? Oh well, Ill have to buy one. Theyre like what, $10? Thats not to bad.
BTW. Can you put software on CDRs? I know you can put pictures and music, but what about programs and games?

Buy a USB Host cable it turns the HDD of both pc's into external hdd's on the other pc

it's like using a crossover cable but it only links hdd doesn't network them
