Exacly how is NetBSD for the Dreamcast more usless then linux?! You are aware that linux is a clone of UNIX, and BSD is UNIX.

As for the impractiblity of the Dreamcast as a computer. Yes as a desktop its not worth it, but as a programming system it would work.

I'm going to be making a DCp sometime before the end of the summer (i hope). I should put a mini-ITX in the DC case, itd save me some money.

I'd say that BSD for DC is slower and less useful than Linux on the DC, though that would imply that DC linux has a practical use, which it doesn't, really.

as a programming system it would work.

How? Why would anyone want to code on Linux on the DC?

Homebrewers would use it as a programming system. The Dreamcast has one of (if not) the largest homebrew community.

And I still dont see how NetBSD would be slower then Linux, after all Linux is behind NetBSD in compatablity of hardware. I can see how BSD would be slower if you use a GUI but otherwise I cant see any reason for the kernels loading at differnet speeds.

It's not really a viable development platform on DC, as I've stated before, because it's too slow and limited in functionality. I think there's been a release of MAME which used Linux DC and was too slow to run anything more challenging than Pacman. If you want to do DC homebrew (legally) you use KOS, or program in SH4 assem.

It's not the DC that is slow and limited in functionality here, it's linux. Go download it and see for yourself.

Kos is the way for programming, but there are 5 homebrew OS's, not including KOS. 3 Linuxs and Netbsd, and some other one.

I know this was "cancelled" and all, but some thoughts I had:

The Dreamcast's modem port is where the hard drive "should go." That is to say, it is a high-speed port and people have already made HDD adapters for it. VMU ports are ridiculously slow, and you'd cry watching Linux boot. See the DC Linux pages for info on this

No real reason not to use the keyboard/mouse adapters at this point. With some searching you can probably get them for a few bucks at stores that still carry them.

Though I think even though EBgames is selling them for $24 shipped, that money would be better spent on a junk PC...

Its not impossible to do this project, it would be very dificult, but not impossible, all you would have to do is look up and decode the DC motherboard, take off the chips that make it only play DC games, put in a hard-drive which you can put the thing that hooks to the hard-drive on the the DC Motherboard, add a CPU, which there would be a few more things...

I think i want to take everything out of the DC, and add:
-PC Motherboard
-CPU
-512MB RAM
-40GB or 80GB Hard-drive
-CD/DVD Drive
-New Cooling Fan
-Power Suplie
-128MB Video Card
-And try to get Windows to work on it, i might do this to the Xbox, because there would be more room in the inside...

When theres a will, there is a way!

And spray-paint the Dreamcast Black and install Linux to remind yourself of how much you can bycott M$ with your very own DreamComp
