XP-Box idea

I might make(this was done before) a Xbox thats an official computer, it will run off Windows XP, The Hard-Drive will be 40GB, the RAM will be 512MB, it will have much more, any questions?

ok...
Not really possible....
1. you con't change the ram without extreeme knowledge of the Xbox.
2. WinXP can't just be "installed" it needs to be hacked on.
3. more reasons than I can type out.

True, but i have someone who goes to school for electronics and makes his own computers to help me...

Him and I might just make a computer, heres what the money budjet would cost:

CPU: $85.00
Motherboard: $46.00
Hard-drive: 80GB $56.00, 250GB $130.00
RAM: 512MB $37.49
Video card: 8MB $15.00, 256MB 79.00
DVD/CD Burners: $49.00
Outside case: $31.99
Cooling Fan: $11.99

The total would probably be around $340.00, expensive, but i dont also have to finish it in a day, it might take days and months to complete it, from the person that goes to school for electronics says its easy to make, but he made his for free...

Yeah, build your own out of standard parts, instead of trying to make one out of an X-Box.

Last I heard you could only upgrade an X-Box to 128MB of RAM, and you had to solder on SMT ram chips to get it that high.

I've not seen XP installed to an X-Box, but the X-Box Linux site has instructions for loading Windows 2000.

Hard-drive: 80GB $56.00, 250GB $130.00

If you have an Office Depot nearby, they have 80GB Maxtor brand harddrives on sale now for less than that.

Video card: 8MB $15.00, 256MB 79.00

If you intend to game at all, I'd highly recommend against getting an 8MB card. Get at least a 32MB card, shouldn't be too hard to get one for $30 or so.

Could you give a link to the page that says how? In their FAQ, they basically said it couldn't be done.

Easy, run VMWare under linux

It'll be as slow as a 200 mhz machine or slower though

Ill first make a Computer, then i will get an Xbox and pry it open, lol, and replace everything in it somehow and put everything a PC has and put it in the case of the Xbox, and get it to work on a TV, or i might just get Linux, Windows 2000, and replace the Hard-drive with an even bigger Hard-drive...

Hmm... I seem to recall it running natively (only the Linux BIOS was used), but most of the links I'm finding are dealing with it under virtualisation software. Video of that here: http://xbox-linux.sourceforge.net/pic/xbox-linux4.avi

Oh well, I'll look through the archive.org archive of the X-Box linux site and see if I can find the orginal mention of it.

computers are easy to make. at school we had to learn how to do it then we were timed on how fast we were.it took us twelve minuites to connect it up.

This is the dumbest idea ever, sorry, I'm also presuming you have never heard of TV-out on video cards, most ones today have it. It's S-Video or YPrPb (<-if you have an adapter). You could easily take a normal computer and use it as a "XP-Box". Why anyone would want to use a generic case made by M$ is beyond me. You're much better off getting somthing like these Home Theater Chasis' from ThermalTake.

Oh, but building the computer is the easy part! Troubleshooting afterwards why something isn't working, now that's where it gets time consuming.
