OK, when I hold down one or both of the A and/or B buttons, I get a scrambled, static screen (ASCII chars and the like). Not holding them down gives me a solid or flashing red screen.
I'm gonna check for shorts between the controller board and the MB.
I also took a little sandpaper to the connector->MB connector to clean it up a bit. I think I'm getting a slightly better connection.

i've been getting something similar with my NES...but mines all origonal no portablizing with this one (got a extra mobo for cheap going to use it)
its the connector its shot...i finally finiahed off my mega man colloection (finally got 5 after spending $40 on it) and i try to play it and it would get stuck, try the blow trick it works for a little longer and then it does the ASCII think how ever....i found it odd was it tried to draw the start screen, it had the shape of the megaman logo but instead of being pictures there was hiragana characters (japanese characters)
my guess is my spit finally dried out mid game and it lost connection on some pins...the pins in the system (on the cart interface) are rather messed up
This still happens to my NES as well. It always flashed red or went solid red on whatever game I tried. I cleaned the connector (same red effects and even did the game genie connector mod (like the Nestable fellow at the classic gaming site) to no avail. Right now it's just sitting under my bed doing nothing. I'll have to check out my 7805 thing one day.
Got my new connector in the mail today, and it doesn't FLASH any more. Now all it does is give me a red screen. I can still get the ASCII stuff while holding down one of the buttons with power on. Also tried it with a Game Genie to no avail.
I checked the 7805 and it's getting between 8v and 9v in, and it's outputting 5v. Nothing is shorted, and the connector is seated firmly against the mobo.
Is there something I missed?
I'm gonna hit up Goodwill for a new NES today. I'm thinking I've got a fried chip somewhere along the line
I am so phsyched! Today I pulled out my NES for the first time in about 8 years. It had about 1cm of dust on the top, but it looked pretty good after I wiped it on my bed, and the inside was pretty clean. It took about 30 minutes before I got it working, and got to see some interresting colours. It felt like an acid trip, because I went through red, orange, yellow, green, blue, black, and white screens. I even saw some colours that I didn't know existed. I will probably call and try to get a new connector from Nintendo, because I don't feel like forking out $25 after shipping.
I put my NES through some rough treatment to get it to work, but hey, it worked. I only tried 2 games, Mario/Duck HUNT, and SMB3.
Here's what worked for me:
1. Blow in NES to make sure there isn't any dust in the cart slot.
2. Give the the cart a good dry blow to get rid of loose dust.
3. Use a Q-Tip or cloth to get more dust off the cart.
4. Wet your lips, and give the cart a good blow with some spit to increase the connection on the contacts. DO NOT HUCK A LUGI IN THERE
5. Stick your game in and give it a try. If it doesn't try to start, press the power and reset buttons randomly for 10 seconds, while pushing the cart up and down on the platform. If it still doesn't work, repeat steps 1 to 5. If it tries to start, but resets every 1 or 2 seconds, press the reset button a few times. If it still doesn't work right, repeat steps 1 to 5.
If you get the game to run, but is really fuzzy, staticy, or blurry, try tapping the NES, softly at first, then gradually harder. If you are still having problems with it, try resetting.
With the 2 games I tried, Mario kept restarting, which I think it always did, untill I pressed the reset button. When I started SMB3, it was fuzzy/staticy untill I tapped it. I was having problems at start up, but after I tapped and reset, all was good. I believe that I have always had that problem too.
Well, I found another NES at GoodWill for $8 ( ) and I'm gonna mod the power soon, see if it works.
