Well, you could always use what I call the "taser mat". It is a mat of connectors with very high voltages flowing through them. ^^* A critter steps on it, they get shocked, but since most people wear shoes made out of rubber, it is safe if you're careful...and if the trashcan is non-conductive...

Actually, it does: if you want to scare the crap out of one kind of animal, carry the scent of a bigger predator. For instance, if you carry some lion dung, sniffer dogs will run away from you, guaranteed...
