Nintendo Portable Entertainment System (nPes)

I got a new NES in the mail today, and I'm thinking about turning it into a portable. I don't have any wood working or metal working skills, so I think I should just quit right now. I don't want to use one of those project cases or frankenstein the system, as it is too big. So what should I do?

Well wih woodworking the only thing that says how hard a project is (as for a box) is how hard you make it. If your planning to make just a box, simple rectangualr shape, thats not hard. Its more of what kind of curves, acsent pieces and fancy you want it to look.

I've taken woodwork 4 years in high school and have doen just about anything you can think of. I'f you'd like some advice PM me I'd be more then willing to help.

P.S. Just hope you have the right tools though.

I just have a jig saw, hand driven drill, and some sandpaper, I hope that can work.

I havn't thought of any nice design, I'm just thinking about doing it, and I need a screen, ect.

Wow! well if you ave a power drill that would be better. For cutting a jig saw will do alright, but a bandsaw and table saw will be of much greater use. You may also look into getting some clams (the oversized rubberbands work too)) to hold your pieces well they dry.

IF you dont have the screen yet really dont sweet it then. Once you know what screen you want/have a screen then you can plan out your design and start to work (as soon as you have the materials).

I have 2 power drills. I also have a circular saw, and that's about it.

Well with enough patience and endurance you can smoth out anything with sand paper. The circular saw and jig saw will like I sayid do fine the thing is a saw with persisane cuts are better (less finsih work) so if you can get access to one that would best but if you cant its possible to manage. The first project I did I have to hand plan, use a hand saw, use a manual miter box and finally sand it until my arm felt like it would fall off. Thats what you may end up doing but you do have some power tools you can save ourself some trouble.

Say if you were planning a design if it was anything like Ben's (nice big curves) I will suggest you look into lamiating wood, or using just veneer. Its much easier to manage and contoure to you desired shape.

What are the minimal dimensions of the board if I cut off some of the ground strips?

Well according to the info on doomportables its 7.75x4.688 but thats not cutting of the grounding strip(s).

Those dimensions are when you remove the RF box and cart connector, btw
