N64 controller to usb mod > help

Post by Nitrous64 »

I want to mod my N64 controller to be used with my pc. I have successfully completed snes & nes controllers by soldering them to old keyboard controllers. After reading through the forums I've become aware that this will not be as straight forward as the others, because of the analog stick.

My question is, since this will be used on a pc, can I pull a standard "pot" stick
out of an old pc joystick and drop it in?

If so can that stick be tied to keyboard inputs?

thanks! :D

EDIT: gah, scrap what I just said. you probably didn't get a chance to read it anyway.

what exactly is meant by "keyboard controller"? like as in a piano keyboard? i was thinking if you had an actual usb pc controller, and wired the buttons to that, and then just put the analog stick from that into the n64 controller, it might simplify things.

if i understand what you're trying to do, yes it would be possible with the right pot, but pretty complicated.

I'm using the board left over from a standard usb keyboard, I took it apart and use the controller buttons to simulate keyboard strokes (a,s,d,f / 1,2,3 etc.) I'm probably using the wrong terms :? I just do this kind of stuff as a hobby and don't have too much experience.

Thats great to hear you think its possible! How would I know what the "right pot" is? I was hoping to break down an old generic usb ps2 knock-off or (preferably) use a joystick from a wii nunchuck.

Oh, okay, no I just misread. When you said keyboard controller I googled it and midi controllers were the first thing that popped up.

Yes, I believe this is possible. Many people like to do something where they substitute the 4 c buttons with one joystick, and what you are wanting is to substitue 4 arrow keys with a joystick, so same basic thing, right?

This would probably be a good read.
