God! They are! Though Im gonna see if I can help out the sysadmin at my school. I teacher I was speaking to said he somethimes lets students help him. Hopefully I can get a higher level account or at least permission to use some dos or batch files to work around stuff. Its pathetic! Kids have got kicked out of there account for using paint! Also, Im gonna take a computer course at my school, so maybe we'll get better accounts or something. (Though I highly doubt it...goodie wrote:These computers you people have to use at school sound pretty useless.

I know most of the computers at school inside and out, at least the ones in my cxlassrooms. I have rebuilt a couple, and almost all of them are crap.
We got several donated old corpirate PCs, some Digital 3000 series machines, a buttload of old P1's (all with CAD software on them
) and 4 new Hewlett-Packard machines. (the lot of them are 400Mz P2's or less, 200Mhz P1's, and a 150Mz Pentium Pro that was running nt 4.0 when we got it. (i've got one of those Digital PCs at home, because there was no hard drive in it, so I'm going to put in a 10GB HD I have lying around and install Suse Linux on it.
)

Oh yeah, the teachers like watching what everone has on their screens via some stupid program... Though a nice way to get around that is *accidentally* pulling the ethernet cable out of the computer...
Also, even if I did get proxy settings, the computers are so handicaped that I couldnt do anything with them. Im thinking of bring firefox on a usb drive to school and using that. I think the filtering/handicapness is all intergrated into IE.

All my teachers are afraid of FireFox. Just downlaod Portable FireFox and put it on your USB drive. (I've got the full version on a 10GB USB external hard drive, but portable FF does everything but cache pages.)
The school has no proxy server, I know because I poked around with the network hardware through the DOS prompt and a couple IT professional programs.

My school has nice(r) computers. The oldest (that're still in popular use) are iMACs from around '01 or '02. There are two or three sets of new (this year) iBooks. Then there's the computer lab (by computer I mean its used for computerized keyboarding, JAVA class, etc) with Dells (they looked somewhat new). Then some other labs of the same stuff.
Oh yeah, and we have IE, FF, and Safari.
And like 4-6 technicians.

hey I know there's a lot of good proxies out there but give http://www.atomboom.com a try. Just click CGI Proxy. You can even disable it's menu thing at the top so nobody would be able to tell the difference unless they look at your address bar, which still takes a couple seconds to absorb. Our school's blocker has blocked all proxy websites, this is like the only one I know of that still works.
I'll give it a try tomorrow, I think I'll be in the library to print something out some time during the day.

This is the reason why I had asked sombody to setup the circumventor.
At school, I can't get to any site that lets you use proxy servers, or HTTPS sites.

Yeah, these machines are completely unlocked (and I figured out the admin passwords!
)
I can't get to i-mockery, or for that matter, doomportables, so I just typed them into proxify.com. As long as you ignore all the ads, it's OK.
