Dreamcast power cycled to death?

Post by Ikaruga »

First post, so, hi everyone (but I'm long time reader ;) )

We know that quick power cycling isn't recommended in any electric appliance, but I've know of Dreamcasts that had the power button physically failing before the console internal circuits themselves, which means a lot of power cycling was done in its life time. So I'd ask if power cycling eventually would do any harm to the Dreamcast or its power supply? (Most everyone power cycles it a lot when switching games, instead of doing the proper way or installing one of the reset button mods!)
Thanks in advance!

Best regards,
Ika.

No, unless you count the repeated spinning up of the GDROM

Thanks, marshallh.

Actually, many Dreamcasts at this age are turning off and on quickly due to that well known issue of the six aluminium pins in the power board getting bad electrical connection over time. The fix is quite easy and is widely publicised in the internet - so we can guess that these surviving Dreamcasts are OK after all and should be alive and kicking for years to come. :)

The GDROM usually is a source of some trouble too but it is a moving part, as a rule (of physics), moving parts always fail first. I already had to change the reader in my PS2, which is newer than my Dreamcast.
