Build your own portable computer... not such a silly idea!

Step one, get a grip on yourself this will not be a power house AMD super gaming computer built into a tablet PC form factor. This will be a Tablet Pc, for half the price, and thats really it, isn't it? Getting what you want, for cheaper than someone wants to sell it... or make it if it doesn't already exist.

Thats why you guys portablise stuff... noone wants to give you want you want in the consumer electronics market place... or atleast without reinventing the wheel and charging you 18 times over to rebuy all your favourite games. (but I digress). Where to start? Well I posted this earlier...

I would love to make one myself... but i like smaller better...

Nano ITX standard board... 12cm by 12cm with a height due to ports of about 3.5 cms... (aprox 4.7 inches square, and 1.4 inches high). Not sure i can do much about the height, maybe i could desolder the ports and rearrange them (probably completely mess up the board).

NANO ITX specs, 1 - 1.4ghz eden processor, indubuilt IGP graphics with a C3 chip, equivilant to 8x AGP MMX 2d and 3d. Meant to deliver FALWLESS dvd and mpeg2 play back, and capable of playing diablo 2 (not so bad really). can have up to a gig of ddr 400 ram. Mini PCI (kinda gonna ignore that), network port, 2 usb 2.0 ports, vga, tv out, and built in stereo (can't remember if its 2.1 or what).

I figure with a hacked PS-one screen or high quality 5 - 7" LCD screen, and a 100gig laptop hard drive, with as tiny an inbuilt keyboard as i can find, and an external mouse, this would be the cutest nano laptop one could build.

I'd have to go back and check power consumption to see if it is really viable. I was considering to day, if it had an external battery pack that i could wear as belt clip, with a cable running to the unit, i could add some sort of nub mouse controller and mayber even make it a wearable PC.. Oh to dream.

TOTAL COST, whole bunch of money... real satisfaction in having something very small. Plus I am an old school gamer, maybe with a suite of arcade and console emulators and a personally customized usb game pad then this could be one of the sweetest toyes in the universe.


Its actually very viable, VIA has started production of embedded CHEAP ultra portable 12" laptops for linspire, its just a slightly modded mine ITX board apparently.

....and it could be done, but its a bit stupid. I have through recent research found VIA's range of embedded boards, already cut down smaller than 12cm by 12cm size, and built to be portable they also have better arranged ports and smarter ram positioning to save on vertical height.

Why would you do it? Now I have been into PDA's, and portable video devices, tablet pc's and mp3 players for a while. And nothing does everything together as small as I want, without making you pay the earth for it. Now I find that there ARE embedded (portably designed), incredibly low power consumption boards around that that can take true ddr ram, playback amazing DVD quality video, and have the power to run high end computer games from 4 years ago, so why wouldn't i be excited.

So if you want to spend the time, wireing one together, with either a 6" or 7" lcd (touch screen or not your choice) plus a high quality game pad, and a very large harddrive and a dvd drive emulator you could efectively build the OQO equivilant from 3/4 to 1/2 the price... and to me, coupled with the feeling of accomplishment, that would be all i could ever want...

So I say to everyone that says buy a laptop... just bite my butt

I've even found a supplier that stocks a 6.4 inch lcd that will display 800 x 600 (PSone screen can only do 640x480), better yet its only 80 dollars (US i believe) still a sweet deal though.

GOOGLE is my friend.

I checked out this guys project, and it seems like an awesome plan, but i've found stuff that i can build that is smaller, and with higher specs (far higher specs).

I'll keep you guys posted on what i find. I NEVER promised to quit, mind you I am not 12 year older skater kid, and as such am able to accept the limitations of the unverse and work around them...

TOTAL budget $1000 AUD... thats $770 for you americans... and dammit if i don't think this might actually work for that price.

Guidelines to success:

4) Number of posts/amount of portables created does not correlate in any way to your seniority. I have been a member of Ben's organization for well over 3 years now. But I am not a "Senior Member". I have no problem with this either. Your seniority is based on the quality of your posts.

5) Just because you cannot physically see a person does not mean that they do not have feelings. I have witnessed several occurances of heckling that may or may not have meant to be mean. But they did hurt someones feelings, and this angered me probably more than the person who was hurt.

6) Everyone makes mistakes. We are all apt to post something we don't mean now and again. In this case make an apology. If everyone else follows the other rules, you will be forgiven, and life on the boards will go on.

By following all of these guidelines everyone can be successful in keeping the boards clean and friendly to both new-comers, and old farts like me.


7) If you arent a mod, and you think a topic needs to be dealt with, DO NOT make a post saying "this is dumb, some mod please lock this" Making a post such as that, you are undermining authority. it wont get it locked any faster, and it just makes you look like a power hungry dink. You have no clout, quit acting like you do. This does not undermine rule #3 in any way. Modding is their job, not yours. They don't show up to your work and tell you what to do.

8 ) DO NOT make a new topic to address a current issue you have with a person's conduct, or a certain topic on the board. This will not make the issue solved any quicker and will in all likelihood cause a worse problem.

9) If you believe a rule has been breached, it is a matter for PM's. Take it up with a mod, admin, or the person you believe is ill informed of the guidelines.

I have only joined this forum about 5 days ago, I was not aware that there was any history of you been mistreated. I apologise for my statements they were not meant with disrespect against you.

I just have my own personal views on what is possible and viable, and I was trying to sell a viable concept to this forum based on its own views on what was impractical.

I don't believe there is any need to leave this forum, if you feel mistreated then quiet reflection and approaching the perpetrator about it would be the best way to go...
