I can tell you one thing thats wrong with the first picture; College kids walking around with those things. I know Sony isnt going to sell thoses things cheaply so where would a college kid get the money to buy one?

Next the fact one picture show a Grand Tersimo(sp) disk.... I thought Sony said they'll be using improved Mini Disks?

Last the screen and system better live up their promise and have near HD quality. If I'm shelling out more then $200 for that thing I better be able to watch movie(prefrably DVD or AVI), listen to mp3 and play old Playstation games. Otherwise Sony's going down the same road Sega did once and it spelled a sooner end for them then if they hadnt wasted money.

/\ My opinions on this matter

You'd be surprised. Ipods are marketed the same way.
improved Mini Disks?
They've said UMD from the start.

So backward compatibility is impossible. And unless those things catch on, you're stuck with buying new movies/albums on UMD or trying to cram stuff on a memory stick, if that's even possible on the PSP.

Well Sony did say that the disked used are "like" the original but they have a higher capsity and you could formate the old MDs to get about twice the capsity out of them.

As for memory sticks I saw Poppe's posted pics and it shows a I guess a port for a memory stick, if thats the case then you can get them is as high as 512 mb.

Still, Sony hypse things up a lil to often and charge near ungodly amoust of money for their products. I'm not bad mouthing the item yet I just want the thing to live up to whats Sony's making it out to be, because there nothing more damaging then a product that falls short of expectations.

I like it, but the wide-screen design seems almost too wide.

WHERE'S THE ANALOG CONTROLLER????

Post by benheck »

Ben here and I feel I must comment on this.

Comment 1: This is way cooler than the Nintendo DS and will butcher it. Dump Nintendo stock NOW.

Comment 2: WHERE'S THE ANALOG CONTROLLER??? For crying out loud, couldn't they sacrifice SOME thickness for it? Even if the D-pad is "analog sensitive" it's still not the same.

Comment 3: Is it just me, or does this look like a Sony device that would have come out in 1990? I'm not saying it's bad, but it's retro, as in "Game Gear" or 1990 Model DAT Walkman.

Comment 4: Not that I am suprized, but it is similar in layout to the drawings I did in my last "Future of Videgames" article. And those drawing were actually from June of 2003.

Comment 5: I will buy one of these. But, again, all the apparent push to make it flat, won't the big huge screen be prone to damage?

Comment 6: Where's the speakers?

5: Funny you mentioned a similar fault in the GBA SP. Broken screen would be the perfect reason to buy a new one.

6: The grey/metallic circle under the D-pad may be it. Its not like you need sterio with a portable.

yeah, I don't like the speaker position though. I'd probably end up covering it with my hand trying to get a better grip on the unit.

I belive the circle under the d pad is the analog "stick"

also, with the amount of power they say it should have, how are they going to disapate the heat? I mean, they show that it should have only a little less power than the ps2.

Only way they could possible keep it thin and not over heat is with a fan.

Say just a thought anyone know where they have a list of features/abilities and possibly games reaslease, or is Sony still keeping those behind closed curtins?

Save for the vent fan, the PS2 is cooled passively. Since the PSP is less powerful than the PS2 and presumably produces less heat, plus the fact that it is a handheld, which naturally entails a much more effiecient chip design with less heat production, lends strong evidence that the PSP will sport a passive-cooling solution. They might have included a small fan, but I doubt it.

To the best of my knowledge, the PS2s processor has a heatsink, that couple with a fan, is not what I would call 'passive cooling.' Passive cooling would be having no fans and having heat removed via holes in the top, like the PowerMac G4 Cube, IIRC. I'm pretty sure the original PS also had a heatsink, and probably some type of fan, though a could be wrong. Isn't the PSP supposed to be around the same level, if no better than the original? Hence, its processor would be giving off quite a bit of heat. I definitely think it needs a fan or somthing...

I don't know about the original Playstation, but the PSOne doesn't have a fan. I haven't opened up a PS2 recently, so I could be wrong about the PS2. In any case, there have been some considerable advances in chip design since the PS2's debut 4 years ago, many of which help to reduce heat, namely 0.13 micron manufacturing techniques. All arguments are made moot, though, when you take a look at the pictures (and I can't believe I didn't bother to check). There's no fan whatsoever.
