Why is that guy taking power from the cartridge pins and not directly from the batteries? Surely it would make more sense to just wire directly to the battery pins on the board? Then there'd be no risk of varying voltages or current? Can anyone shed any light on this?
He's using a 5v source and a resistor to get 3v...?
I'm using the innards from an SP to light my GBA. I managed to do it fairly successfully but the ribbon cable from the SP LED snapped earlier, such a shame.
I'm waiting for another SP to arrive in the post. After which I hope to make it fairly snazzy. Potentiometer to vary brightness, on/off switch. It's a simple hack but it's still a great one.

Well if you were to solder straight to the batteries, the light would then be constantly on (unless you then wire a separate switch and cut the case to make it fit).
I think he then dropped the 5v down to 3v VIA a resistor to ensure it would have a steady and constant current that the gameboy could provide over the batteries. I mean, you could even add a capacitor in so it keeps it at a level voltage the entire time. And then when it shuts off or dies because the batteries are dead, it would do an awesome effect where the light 'dims' out and dies (capacitor discharge)...
