Hey,

Now I have this idea which is to plug my Modem / DSL into a Computer that will read by IP and Log all transfering data.

So what this would allow you to do is, Ban by IP, Calculate your Download Quota / Data (EG: 51.61GB has been downloaded on IP 192.x.x.x) and more options when I think of them...


Question is, HOW would you actually do it?

I mean, I think the setup would go like this...


DSL / Modem ------ > ------ SERVER / MASTER CONTROLLER PC / MAC ------ > ------ Router / Hub / Switch ------ > ------ Xbox, PS3, Computers, WiFi etc.

So the SERVER / MASTER CONTROLLER PC / MAC is the computer I am talking about which will tell you by IP or whatever, who has downloaded the most data. Again, EG: IP 102.x.x.x has downloaded 51.61GB of 200GB...


If you are confused, let me know. But all the SERVER / MASTER CONTROLLER bla bla bla does is acting like a server for a LAN. Except it logs what every computer / item on the network is doing.

Is there like a DOS program, Windows X program or even a Macintosh program that can do this?

I would need 2 10/100 Ethernet card in the PC or I guess the modem could go through the Router / Hub / Switch as seen in the layout above.

If you just want statistics and the like it would be easier to flash the firmware of your router with a custom firmware like DD-WRT or Tomato. I think you can log traffic too.

Don't know what you mean by ban by IP; block all traffic from a certain address?

I mean, to make this clear and so you understand how sh!t Australian Internet is, I currently have one from Telstra (Pronounced Tell-stra).

Now Telstra is like the company / business that runs out phones and phone copper lines in our street. So they own it all and have it all. Money, power to choose Fiber Optic etc...

I have one of their Modems. It is very cheep and built poorly in that fact.

Where I live, I only get sometimes when the lines are not busy 3.0MB/s. (Megabits. Not Megabytes.)

I do also have a Netgear modem / router so that could work I guess...


Do you just flash it and stuff and thats it?

What if it does not work, can I re-flash the original or make a backup of what ROM is on there at the moment?

Not unless I really get into it. Like open the modem / router up and find the chipset(s)...

Are you sure you can't flash it? Go to your router (usually 192.168.1.1, or 192.168.2.1) and see if there is an option to upgrade the firmware. If there is, you probably can use some custom software (IIRC there are plenty). Other than that, I don't know what you can do.

The fact that you are using a modem-router combo might complicate things, though.

There may be an option to back up the firmware, but you probably only will have whatever firmware you can download from the router makers' site.

You can, but there are ways around it (for the computer savvy).

You can use the modem/router that your ISP provides as just a modem, buy a router that you know can be flashed, and connect that to the modem and connect all your computers to it. You just have to watch the settings to try to avoid NATing a NAT and such. I would suggest turning NAT off on the modem, in fact.

As far as 'banning' a computer, you could set up a MAC address filter list. MAC addresses can be spoofed, but unless the other people in your house are tech-savvy they might not be able to figure it out (and if they're blocked, they wouldn't be able to go to the Internet to find out how ).

No, any decent off the shelf router will do. If you want to just walk into a store and get one that'll work, print off a sheet of the supported routers from DD-WRT's or Tomato's site and take it with you. Any store with even a little selection should have one that'll work, but I would do some research to find one that will support what you need.
I personally have this router running Tomato at home. We've had it probably 3 years, no problems that couldn't be solved by simply reseting it (even that was rare, I don't think it's been powered off since I left home 6 months ago). It works perfectly, so I don't know anything about modding newer routers.

I guess that solves it then.

Would of been cool though to make it so you have total control VIA a computer like my original idea. So it is like a workstation or something and you can feel like a king ruling the internet in your home!
