Very, Very drawn out PSoneP

Includes but not limited to: SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Gear and I guess the Virtual Boy.

Very, Very drawn out PSoneP

Post by bicostp »

I'm planning on building a PSoneP. (Was going to make a Radica Genesis thing, but couldn't get a cart slot or dead Genesis.) I plan on making it horizontal with the screen in the middle (a la GBA). I have tons of scrap sheet aluminum lying around, and I'm gonna use it to build a case. I just need some rather basic information.

1. What are the exact dimensions of the PSone mobo?

2. What voltage regulator will knock down the voltage from 12 to 7.5 V? OR Can the Intec screen be run on <12v? (RadioShack preferred, please.)

3. How much power does the PSone draw? (milliamps)

Thank you for your contribution.

So you know, here's a list of what I plan on doing.
*****************************************
-Intec screen mounted in the middle of a horizontal system
-Internal memory card
-Split a standard digital controller (I hate analog sticks, I don't know why.)
-Aluminum case with raised PS-controller-shaped section w/ a raised screen (if I have to.)
-R/C car battery (if it can handle 2 powerful motors for an hour, it can handle electronics for at least that long.)
-RCA Inputs/Outputs
-Plexiglass cd cover (safe and you can still see it spin! :D

I'll be editing this post, so keep coming back to read it.
I'll have a concept drawing up sometime today or tomorrow. It will probably wind up as something like Ben's CNC PSone Portable from the book.

So far I've got the Intec screen, the aluminum for the case, and basic soldering skills. I still need to get a battery, Intec screen, PSone, and I should improve my soldering skills. (I'm getting a second Intec screen because I want to simply modify my first one to hook directly up to RCA jacks. That way it can plug into anything, including my PSoneP (for 2 player action w/o a TV)

Where I plan on getting the parts
***************************
A/V plugs- Old VCR or RadioShack
Intec screen- Toys "R" Us
PSone- Thrift store, Gamestop, yard sale
Aluminum- Old cable routers
Miscellaneous hardware: Garage/Benny's (if you're from New England, you may know what this is) / Home Depot / Lowes

This post will most likely be a forum record for "number of edits".

Hey Bicostp, if/when you find RCA input/output plugs, can you let me know where you found them? I'm looking for some as well (preferably red, white, and yellow colored bands, like the real deal)

Good luck w/ the PSoneP :)

OK, I've got a blog up so I don't eat up tons of bandwidth.

http://psonep.blogspot.com/

Only people from Benheck.com know where to access it, because I told Blogger to make it private. (hey outsiders: :P )

You can power the LCD off the 5v regulator by patching, lets say, a 12v power line intot he 5v regulator. Once you supply power, the Psone will power on without the main switch. It would be better...

Concept Art Revision 2

Post by bicostp »

I threw out revision 1 because it sucked. But here's revision 2 of my concept art, rendered with #2 pencil and flowchart stencils.

At left is the unit, at right the side views. (In the right picture, the black circle is the CD cover, which will be plexiglas.

Does anyone know of a good, free Illustrator alternative for Windows?

I don't like 'em, for reasons unknown to me. I grew up using Atari 2600 joysticks and computer keyboards for gaming, and I got used to digital controls. I may include them, depending on which controller I hack up. (Screenpad, digital, dual shock)

Can anyone answer my boldfaced questions at the top of the thread? (The current Portables of Doom mirror has no PSone mobo information.)

The Gimp

It's an open-source editing program. Tons of plug-ins, and (as far as my experience shows) is as powerful as Photoshop. All it's missing the the pretty interface.
