Found an n64

Post by bdl »

Hey all- I've been looking all over the 'net for some info on the n64, you guys are the only ones that seem to know what you're talking about. I found an n64 along with the A/V cable (it was chewed up some) and was testing it out. Powers up fine, no smoke, but there's no A/V output at all (tested with a good A/V cable I had). Anyone got any ideas where to look to troubleshoot the issue? I thought about breaking down my good n64, comparing components on the board until I find a bad one, but that's liable to make a person crazy, plus potentially smoke the good one. Thought this old one might be nice to use for an n64p project, if it's salvagable, or sell for parts...TIA

Try removing the jumper pack and then reinserting it, sometime they're just not seated right or dirty.

Hmm...thanks for the reply; this unit was missing the jumper pack, I'll have to see if my other unit has one I can swap out. Otherwise, cleaned the connectors on the A/V output, still no go. I'm guessing due to the fact that the A/V cable I found it with was chewed up, there was a short at one time and it may have taken out a component or two.

If there is no pack in it, nothing will be on the screen, despite the red light.

I didn't even think about that, it's been so long since I used the n64 anyway. Went out and found the jumper pack I had taken out of my n64 (when I installed the expansion pack), plugged it in and unit started up right away. Wonder if this is why they tossed it out in the first place - they just lost the jumper pack!

Thanks everyone for your help! :)

Is the jumper pack anything more than just a jumper connection, like a piece of wire?

It has a few smt parts on it, but other than that it's just a jumper between some of the points.

Yea, somebody posted a pic of the jumper pack somewhere here(I just don't know where).

VB kind of took on my point. That was what I was leading to.
