A few questions about batteries...

Includes but not limited to: SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Gear and I guess the Virtual Boy.

A few questions about batteries...

Post by daingster »

I'm on a portable SNES project and I don't know much about electronics. I have a few questions about batteries...

1- I'd like to be able to charge my batteries without having to remove them from the case, like when charging a laptop or a cell phone simply by plugging it into wall power. Is there a way to do so? If so, is it possible with both NiMH and Li-ion batteries?

2- A 7805 regulator needs at least 7.5V to be functional but Benheck's book recommends using a 7.2V battery. Is it really safe to use a 7.2V battery even if voltage is a little too low?

3- Would you recommend buying ultra-cheap Hong Kong NiMH batteries or is it pure garbage? Are they significantly weaker and/or can they be dangerous? Example : http://cgi.ebay.ca/1-Unit-7-2V-3800mAh- ... 255f4d58d5" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks for your advice!

1. You can charge any re-chargeable battery in your portable. You just hook up the charging jack in the portable attached to the batteries. Then when you plug in the charger to the charging jack it charges the batteries.

2. 7.2v will work, but the more common/better battery to use id Lithiums and they will be 7.4v

3. I would never buy batteries from Hong Kong. Buy from a reputable source. And Lithiums are much better than Ni-cads.

Thanks for your quick answer hailrazer.

I don't understand how you can hook up your batteries to the SNES if they are inside the charger. Do you have to solder wires on your battery connectors and jam it in the charger? Or do you solder the charger to the battery using short wires so you have enough room to wire the SNES on the battery?

Sorry for my noobness :oops:

Umm I don't understand. I never said the batteries would be in the charger ?

The batteries will be in the portable. You will wire them to a charging JACK. The wall adapter charger will then plug into that jack to charge the batteries.
