Gameboy Multicart + SuperGameboy?

Post by HotDog-Cart »

Hey guys.

I picked up a wierd multicart for Gameboy today at a fleamarket for $10. Its called "Super 250 in 1 Color".
It has an interesting set of games.

List:
Zelda Links Awakening DX
Power Quest
Mulan
Pocket Monsters Green
Power Rangers
Chinese Land
Ranma 1/2
Mario Land
Dracula
Bubble Ghost
Karateka
Mogura Depon
MotoCross
Battle City
Soukban 2
Trump Boy
Tennis
Pit Man
Space Invaders
World Bowling
Dr. Mario
Amida
Alley May
Lode Runner
Tetris

So, this is exciting. A okay list of games. I love Pokemon Green!

One issue, I have a US NTSC-U Super Gameboy. This cart does NOT work. It just stays at gameboy picture and the screen on the gameboy is just black. I've tried piggybacking it onto a gameshark, but it still doesnt work. This works perfectly (and saves) on a US gameboy advance.

Whats the issue? Is the Super Gameboy region locked?

I believe so. This isnt a color game, lol. It plays in my gameboy pocket perfectly too.

EDIT: The super gameboy plays any color game that is compatible with the original gameboy. The super gameboy is also NOT region locked.
So why doesnt this work? Does the Super Gameboy have a chip that checks for authentic carts? The gameboys don't?

could be some sort of lockout chip. could also just be a physical incompatibility

Physical incompatibility meaning what? The pins line up, the cartridge is the same size. Hmm. Hopefully someone on this board knows more about the SNES Super Gameboy

Edit: I've kinda ruled out physical incompatibility for 3 reasons.

1) I've sanded down the cart a teensy bit to see if that helps... Nothin.
2) If the Super Gameboy Detects NO cartridge in, it will show an error.
3) If the super Gameboy detects a cartridge thats not properly inserted it will show a garbled gameboy screen.

Neither of those two errors happen.

(I tried to do the melted pen trick to open up my super gameboy, and ended up melting the plastic of the cartridge. Now the screw is surrounded by plastic. Eh.)

So its gotta be some sort of lockout chip. New discovery?

Edit 2:

No lockout chip according to a few sources on the net...

So what now? I could try to like.. take the cartridge(s) apart and see if that makes it work, but I think I've ruled that out. Hmm. There HAS to be reason..

sorry, i guess i was unclear. what i meant to say was that it could be an incompatibility with the rom chip on the cart. it may do something freaky that the SGB doesnt like. weird stuff like that happens.
