There are plenty of free plans available for homemade CNC routers; I bet Ben used one of those. (without giving credit...)
Notably, there are the JGRO plans, the DIYLILCNC plans, and the Joe's 2006 plans. Plus the (non-free) Solsylva plans.

If you're really interested in this, I reccomend you lurk/check out CNC Zone. Lots of experts and useful advice.

I can also try and help you by PM if you're interested.

I like the DIYLILCNC project. That looks perfect. Easy to do. And big enough for projects like these...

Am I right or wrong?

They're all good designs. If you spend some time around cnczone, you can customize it any to just about any size you want.
I'd recommend a working area of 1' x 2' incase you want to work on any, ahem, laptop projects.
And remember, time is money

Yup.

Joes 2006
Fireball V90 (my favorite, but I wouldn't recommend those motors)
ModularCNC
