Nintendo 64 - CPU, RCP and RAM Heat Output
Hey,
This is just a quote to see what chip on the N64 gets the hottest.
Theoretically, if you are playing a game such as Super Smash Brothers (so the CPU / RCP and RAM are actually processing / calculating etc), then what chip would get the hottest out of them all.
I believe it is the CPU - right?
And please do not post that Heat test someone did with the graph. It is useless because it is not aiming on the independent chips. Just the stock heatsink.
Thanks.

RCP gets hottest, close second is the RDRAM, last is the CPU

Oh! Well I was way off.
That means that my Heatsink + Fan setup is directly on the RCP.
Thanks Marshall!!!

Yeah, no.
You REALLY don't need a fan, unless you use really crap heatsinks.

Interesting, no ?ShockSlayer wrote:OAKY
After a few hours(like, two) of playing, the screen get's pretty warm, and so does the n64 and junk and whatever. Eventually my screen starts to cut on and off. I can blo on it to cool it off and it stops for a while. I'm thinking a few vents would solve the problem, as right now I have none. XD
Maybe a fan?

The N64 produces a lot of heat. Most portables need a fan to remove this heat. Otherwise the portable will get extremely hot inside. "Maybe" with enough vents you don't need one. The original N64 had enough vents. But most portables don't have vents.
Heatsinks dissipate the heat off the chips, they don't magically remove the heat from the portable.

Re: Nintendo 64 - CPU, RCP and RAM Heat Output
I think it's pretty common sense that if you stuff a N64 into a fanless, ventless box that it will overheat eventually.
Adding vents allows the heat to dissipate faster outside of the portable, and I think it's enough. But, to each his own.

Yes adding vents will work if there are enough of them. Have you looked at an N64 though to see how many vents are on the bottom? There's a ton of them. And then there are a decent amount on top. There's no way to get that many on most portables.bassmasta wrote:I think it's pretty common sense that if you stuff a N64 into a fanless, ventless box that it will overheat eventually.

Plus the fact that I've never really seen vents on an N64 portable. Most people think the cart slot opening is enough, but it's not.

Yeah but most portables that I've seen don't use stock heatsinks. They use copper heatsinks that can hold more heat and transfer it better than the stock stamped ones.hailrazer wrote:Yes adding vents will work if there are enough of them. Plus, doesn't the N64 have those big aluminum sheets in it too?

Re: Nintendo 64 - CPU, RCP and RAM Heat Output
Hail, you failed to understand what I was talking about. My post(from MR, interesting, no?) was about cooling the screen, not the n64. The screen was defective anyways, I ended up replacing it.
Anyways, again, you don't need a fan. Feel free to add one if you want it. Can't hurt, but don't go spewing nonsense like it's required, when it's definitely not.
I have run an n64p for 5 straight hours on battery life w/exp pack and the only vents were the buttons and switches and it was perfectly fine. Case was a ZN-45.
I think daftmike once said that airflow was only necessary for systems newer than the 64, and that seems to support the above and some of these other posts...

Funny how so many people have overheating problem with their N64 portables. Wonder why?
