Help with n64 portable pt 1
Hey, I wish to make a portable n64 with the ability to play single player with buttons on the case and to plug in controllers on the bottom? I know it should be easy to put the original plugs in the bottom of the case because they're already attached but how should I make another first player controller on the case itself.
Thanks for helping me out

There are 3 wires that connect the controller to the N64. Just connect the wires from the built-in controllers to the corresponding spots on the N64 motherboard.

Wait, so when I get a new controller, I take it apart, cut it up to put the buttons around the case, then attach the wires to the colored spots then if I plug in a normal controller I can either use the buttons or the controller at the same time?

No, you have to have a switch that goes between the internal controller and the external controller. If you have both plugged in at the same time, the data will collide and neither will work. You can attach both white wires (data wires) and both black wires (ground wires) to the n64 circuit board, but you need a switch for the red wires (3.3v) to switch between the controllers.

Alright, I think I know what I need to know for the most part except when you say
Another thing when I cut up the controller for the buttons, how and where do I connect the cut up pieces and for that matter, where do I cut them in the first place?
What exactly is 3.3v and it should still work if I'm only connecting the cut up controller to the colored dots and are plugging in the other 1p player it should still work right? and how..?but you need a switch for the red wires (3.3v) to switch between the controllers.

No, you have to have a switch that goes between the cut up controller and the other 1p player. If you have both connected at the same time, the data will collide and neither will work.
Look at the diagram in the second post of the thread. The 3.3v wire is the red wire that sends 3.3v to the controller. In order to have two controllers, you need a switch on this 3.3v red wire so that only one controller is receiving power at any time. Because only one controller is receiving power at any time, this means that only one controller will be sending data back to the n64 at any time. If you have both red wires connected to the n64, that means that two controllers will be sending data back to the n64 at the same time, and this will not work.
This is how you need to wire it:

Hope this helps

would having the controllers ground wire going through the switch instead accomplish the same thing? I know it's no different but it'd feel more right to me

So is the player 1/2 port connected to the n64 board via wire? and what kind of switch should I pick up? (Name)

Yeah that would do the same thing.lucidPerspective wrote:would having the controllers ground wire going through the switch instead accomplish the same thing? I know it's no different but it'd feel more right to me
They are connected to the same spots. The switch changes the power from one controller to the other.Android wrote:So is the player 1/2 port connected to the n64 board via wire?

No, I meant the actual plug where you put in the controllers. Is that gray thing with the 1/2 player and a seperate one for 3/4 player connected to the n64 board via wire?

No, but once you remove them you can reconnect them with wire.Android wrote:No, I meant the actual plug where you put in the controllers. Is that gray thing with the 1/2 player and a seperate one for 3/4 player connected to the n64 board via wire?
Re: Help with n64 portable pt 1
IMHO its a better idea to switch on the power side. As a general rule of thumb. If you leave the power wire connected at all times, then there are points on the exposed controller board that go all the way back to your regulator at all times. Its easier to short something to ground than to any other point, (ground plane goes everywhere, exposed metal is grounded) which could bust your device because its still connected to the power source, or bust your power source when it gets shorted directly to ground.

Luke, is it fairly obvious where to connect the wires for the controller inputs? do you put them on the red white and black dots?
