Could i use a 9.6 nicd battery pack for the n64?

If you do choose to use Nicad batteries then remember that they have memory, that is unless you discharge and recharge them fully they quickly lose their capacity. NiMH are better, they are a bit more expensive but more energy dense and don't have memory however for a portable I cannot stress enough that Li ion or Lipo batteries are the best. They are light, power dense and not too expensive. If you're an American check out batteryspace and read into the different types of batteries more.

This should educate you about Lithium Polymer batteries. I know you were asking about NiCd batteries, but LiPo's are the best kind of batteries you can get currently.
