Mega CD (Sega CD) woes - help!

Hi, I'm new to this forum so apologies if a problem like this has been posted before.

Basically, my Megadrive I/Mega CD I combination will no longer work properly - it starts up, and the spacey background with the planets appears but the Sega logo and the music no longer happens, so it just hangs.

Pressing reset makes the screen just go black, and switching off and powering back on just brings up the picture again and then hangs.

I've tried cleaning the connections for dust etc. but haven't a clue what to do next.

Anyone got any ideas?

Your motherboard could be broken sadly...

if it is, go into a fit, hurl your broken sega cd across the room, and destroy everything in in your room (except your megadrive, I'll explain later), and then you should feel better!

Top it off with a game of streets of rage! (Thats why I told you to not break your megadrive)

Anyway, seriously, it does seem like it is beyond repair unless the OS is screwed up (hey, it happened to my Windows ME)

Anyway thanks for responding to such a query on a forum which I only realised after I posted is actually for console mods and such.

Anyway - good plan. I'll carry it out to the letter, though I'm more into Cyborg Justice right now. Quite fitting to be tearing lumps out of bits of mechanical hardware too - kind of extends the theme.

Woah hold on... Have you opened it up you? Check to see if a cable's come a little bit loose or something weird, sounds like it's booting into the BIOS but not running the disc. Try and locate the CD-mobo cable.

Alchemist,

We've opened it up, and there are two ribbon-type cables in there. We're assuming that the grey ribbon that connects the CD tray to the motherboard is the cable you mentioned. Anyway, that one and the other one both seem tight and secure. Everything in there seems to be ok (my housemate does electrical engineering so he's not as dumb as me about this).

Put it all back together and it's still doing the same thing (at least it's not even more buggered anyway!)

Any more suggestions, anyone? =)

K, if an ee student checked it out and couldn't see anything wrong I'm going to guess it's nothing obvious. look around for cheap broken spares and try swapping the laser unit out, maybe... or just stick down the cash for a new one

Did you try cleaning the laser lens? (could be disc read failure)

Maybe a connection to the laser unit is broken?
