First portable. Need some help!

Hey guys, this is my first portable. I have ok experience ( fixed a ps2 )
and I need some help with a psone portable. Now for a battery I am using a 7.4v rechargeable battery from a Coby portable DVD player. I have not bought a screen yet but plan on a psone screen. So I need help where to hook-up the battery. Thanks!

Right - well, a PSone uses 8.5 Volts, and usually Portable DVD PLayer Batterys are very low in the mAh (Mili Amp Hours - So it will not last long at all)

So that battery will not work.

Check eBay for a battery. What I reccomend is that you buy a 12 Volt Li-ion (Lithium Ion) Battery from eBay, and use a voltage regulator to drop it down to 8.5 (Ask at Radioshack / Jaycar for help - IE: Take the battery in with full-charge, and tell them I would like top make this out put 8.5 Volts)


Another issue will be the LCD Screen. Those will take a lot of power and so, you must LED mod one if you want it to last longer. (And it is safer, as the Inverters in the LCD screen housing which powers the CFCL tube (Backlight), I think needs 10 000 Volts and it REALLY, gives you a good shock

You might want to hold off on the advice until you are a bit more knowledgeable.

A portable Dvd player usually has anywhere from 2500-4800 mAh batteries. So more than enough for a Psone portable.

A 12v battery regulated down to 8.5 v is a waste of battery and will cause a lot of heat. Dumb idea.

The Psone will run just fine on 7.2v. So the battery he is wanting to use will work just fine.

An led modded screen will last longer but the original screen will look better. And the backlight inverter is not a problem unless you are not being careful.

pstwo uses 8.5v, easy mistake
portable dvd player batteries have a 50/50 chance of having a seperate power board/charge board
and the 12v lithium batteries are usually the bes option for noobs as they are cheap, charge board and charger included and easily dismantled.
but i DO think led mod's are overated.

1) There is no knowledge, that is not power...

2) A DVD portable player battery that you said, was about 2500mAh is quite low, when you could just buy a 9800mAh and it would last A LOT, longer...

3) That 9800mAh battery at 12 Volts, would be perfect and it would produce the most coldest of all cold heat from that little step down voltage conversion...

4) Running the PSone at a lower voltage level is not a good idea. May I remind you that the parts ARE designed to run at 8.5 Volts. So if you then decide to use a voltage step up converter thing to get it from 7.2v to 8.5v, then your mAh has just gone even lower...

1. Yea ok.
2. A 2500 mAh battery will power a pSone and screen for for 2 hours which is fine for most people. Why stop at 9800 ? Why not 20,000? It's all relative and he obviously wants to use what he has which is fine.
3.No 12v is a waste of voltage and that will produce a lot of heat with a step down regulator. You are just wrong there.
4. Wrong again. The Psone is designed to take 7.2v-12v and it steps it down inside to 5v. You don't need to step it up to 8.5v. You are getting the Psone and Ps2 confused. The Psone wall power supply is 7.4v , says so right on it.

Anytime you lower voltage with a regulator the result is heat. In a couple of my portables I tried regulators to get 12v down to 8.0v and the result was so much heat they needed fans. They are very inefficient. Now if you use a switching regulator.
