How to make wheel axle? (Dowel with wheel?)

Post by HotDog-Cart »

Hey guys. I need this for a project.

I need to know how to attach a wheel to a dowel (dowel/rod runs through wheel.). Sounds easy, BUT one issue. The wheel can move BUT the dowel/rod CANNOT move. Dowel/rod has to be stationary and cannot rotate with the wheel. How can I do this?

Thanks.

EDIT: I'd imagine if I was going down hill, and held the dowel/rod tightly enough, the force from the wheel going downhill would rotate the wheel. (And my grip on the rod would cause the rod NOT to move.) Therefore solving the problem, correct? Hold rod in place, wheel moves around it, rod does not move. Although friction will occur.

What are you using this for? Something that weighs 2lbs and will go 50ft, or weigh 200lbs and go 5 miles? Makes a big difference in what will be good enough.

2lbs and goes 50 feet.

I guess you guys will see soon. Probably one of the only things that I'll finish, because its costing me about $20 in total lol.

You could probably glue the axle to wherever it attaches to the frame to keep it from spinning. If you need to hold the wheel on, you could drill a hole through the end of the dowel and stick a pin or bent wire through it.

Bearings.

Wood is a terrible bearing. Take a bicycle and spin the wheel... It spins for a long time. A wood bearing is going to have way more friction, just imagine trying to spin a tire jammed onto a piece of wood...

If the wooden part can be square.. you can just mount a bearing assembly on the end.

Perhaps some wheelbarrow wheels. look at how they attach them.

Im imagining a square box or something with independently mounted wheels... do you have wheels already? what kind of wheels? are you... making wheels out of wood?

Am I thinking too big here?

OK if its smaller then use 2 cd's per wheel, space them out with something to make one wheel, and get a dowel that fits pretty tight in the middle and sand it down till its nice...
