Computer Trouble

Post by cyco vision »

Awhile ago I was on my PC and I was watching a DVD. It started to overheat a bit, so I canceled out of all my background programs and DVD player. Then as I walked away it shut down. I tried to turn it back on, no dice.

The mother board light goes on, as well as the LED light on top but nothing else. The fan LED also lights up for a second, but then it goes off.

So I ask, what do you think is wrong?

NOTE: It was on previously fro a couple of days.

It sounds like it's too hot in there, and won't stay on due to its heat. Take it outside and let it air out for a while. While you're at it, try blowing out any dust inside. All that does is clog up fans and insulate the heat.

I'll be honest with you - I would have never guessed that.

yes if this was not very long ago and it has not had time to cool off just wait when it gets to hot it refuses to tern on to protect itself most computerized things do this including consoles worse case worse case you fried your processor or maybe memory

It sounds like your power supply has tripped. Remove the power plug from the back of the PC and wait for 30 seconds.

If that doesn't work try removing the CMOS battery for a second. Bear in mind this will reset your BIOS settings so make a note of any you've changed.

If that doesn't work take your CPU fansink unit off, clean it, and reseat the CPU. This shouldn't really make any difference unless the PC was moved prior to it breaking down, causing something to loose contact, a CPU pin or whatever - a PC should start up if it's cool, heat issues start later (when everything is hot, obviously). ~Edit, re-reading your post it isn't clear whether you've given this enough time to cool off before trying to turn it back on again. I'm assuming you did~

I don't think it's the power supply, since the motherboard lights are all on. It's gotta be the heat.

That depends entirely on whether he's tried leaving it to cool down. If it won't switch on from cold then it is either dead or the problem is not heat related. End of story.

Well this happened back in December, and I did move it to one room. And I tried to turn it on maybe two times the day of the incident. Ever since then I've been trying, maybe once a month.

I tried to turn it on today, still no luck. I really want this thing to work, I miss Halo and PhotoShop.

Sounds like the power supply toasted. Try running the system with a different power supply. If you're lucky, that's all that is wrong with it. I had a power supply blow once, and it took out the video card, floppy drive, and the DVD rom drive with it.

As long as it didn't kill the RAM, Processor, MB and any of the PCI cards I don't care. The video card was a cheap 64 MB, the floppy drive costed me $1.50 and I have another USB DVD burner.

It's probably the PSU, if that's the case then I'll just get a new case too. >_<

Ive had this happen to me, the fans would begin to spin up, but then it would all shut down.

I replaced the psu with an old one and it fired right up.
