Gameboy Pocket is different?

Post by GoldenfrankO »

Hey Guys, I didn't know where else to post this but I just received a GB pocket and it's a little bit different then my other one. They are both Red but the one I got today doesn't have a power light or power written on the screen. It's also missing the EXT port inside the gameboy, and the slot seems a little bit bigger. Everything else seemed the same except those 2 things. The guy who sold it to me told me his mom used to work for Nintendo, but I don't think I believe him on that. Anyone know if there is something special about this gameboy?

The first version of the Pocket didn't have a power LED. The slot might see bigger because the Pocket is smaller. Not sure about the missing EXT port.

For reference, I have 3 different Gameboy Pockets. One has a black screen bezel with no markings. Another one has the "0))) Power" on it but has no LED, instead the spot where the LED should be is colored in the same color as the Gameboy, and the last one has the "0))) Power" and the LED. They are all the same size and have the EXT port. That's the interesting part about yours since there has always been EXT ports on every Gameboys, all the way back to DMGS and even on the GBMicros. I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't be on there, even if it was a dev unit or prototype or something.

IIRC, the Pockets had IR ports that could serve as a system link, so perhaps the EXT port was dropped in favor of that?

It kind of looks like the plug used to be there but was removed, maybe it broke off or something. That still doesn't answer why it's bigger than the other one you have though.

Weird thing, the odd gameboy didn't want to open. The screws were all glued in (i got those out though) but the 2 screws inside the battery holder were the Gameboy screws, and I cannot find my screwdriver.

If by "gameboy screws" you mean triwing, then using a 1-2mm flathead screwdriver works just as well, just be gentle. I have been using one because my triwing went missing and I am really, REALLY, impatient :)
