record player a tad too fast.

I have a 1960s portable record player by Magnavox. It runs and sound great, with one exception: It plays records about 5% too fast. it does this on both speeds and it is really starting to bug me. To give you guys a bit of info about it, I have taken it apart and found that it is rim driven and that there is no grease anywhere. I am wondering if a lack of grease could be the problem, and if it is, what kind to use on it. Also, there is a capacitor on the motor, and by the dated looks of it, I'll say it is the original one on it. If it has gone bad, could the speed have changed at all? I am not sure if it is a bad capacitor though because while the speed is faster, it is steady.

i just need some help on this because I am getting pretty pissed at this. When abba begins to sound a bit like chipmunks and the chipmunks sound like crackhead chipmunks, you start to get pissed.

Replacing the caps probably wouldn't be a bad, but they might not be the cause of this problem.

Hah your in luck. I just finished fixing one of these up. I have a 1964 model.

By the way the needle on that thing will EAT your records fast. I made a new tonearm from scratch.

I removed that cap actually. Not really needed as I rewired the entire turntable to operate outside the console I found it in.

I didnt have speed issues...well the fact it wasn't spinning could have been a "speed" issue

I have not really noticed my records being eaten by the neede on it (mine is new, however). It did eat records when i first got it because the needle the previous owner put on it was put on wrong and very crooked.

EDIT: can I see a pic of your new tonearm? I would like to keep my records nice, but I don't want to ruin the look of the record player in doing so.

When I said portable I meant that it was small and ran off batteries.

You might also want to check your resistors and replace the ones that are out of spec.
