turn it up as in have it have the highest resistance? If so, use a pot that goes higher

Well I used this one that was suggested to me:

The pot is built into the chip, so I suspect the reason it is not working is a fault of mine. Does anyone know what this could be?

nevermind, i got it to work. it was my own faulty wiring that messed it up, just like i expected. thanks a bunch for all your help.

I'm certainly no expert on the PSone screens, but I suspect the screen isn't getting enough voltage after turning it off and on quickly. I'd bet that the times it works has less to do with shaking the wires and more to do with giving it a few more seconds before turning it on again.

See if that is correct - turn it on and off until the picture doesn't display, then let it sit off for about 5 seconds before turning it on. If that clears up the problem, it's probably not a problem at all. When it's done, you won't be restarting it 3-4 times in quick succession anyway.

When I let it sit for a few seconds it boots up fine. I guess I will leave it like it is. Thanks for the help.

Also try having a thicker ground cable (or a second one). This could also be the problem under stress. Happened to me before.

Okay I am about to do my first psone led mod. Just to make sure I understand correctly I need:
three white 3mm ultra bright leds
one 20 ohm resistor

Is this all that it takes to do the mod? And why would you use three leds instead of four? It seems like if you had four then the light would be more evenly dispersed? or is it a power issue and if you want four you have to do additional modding?

Also, if I understand correctly, the PS2 joystick mod will work with either a super pad (the one with the same basic layout as the original) or a retro bit controller?

Do you have Ben's book? If not, you should get it. It gives a lot of info about the LED mod. only three LEDs are needed. The bottom part of the screen isn't lit up.

4 led's are preferred and much more uniform.

So I can use a fourth led and it won't be any different in the mod? same wiring?
also, does anyone know how much of the top of the board you can cut off? I have heard everything above the screen, but how much farther can you go?

You can cut way further in, but I don't advise it unless you're wiring it up Zenloc-style.

to fit it in the case that i'm using, i'm only needing maybe another mm or two at the most. i'm not going to mod the crap out of it and make the whole circuit board fit behind the screen or anything, i just need to know where to stop, and if i can go way further in, then i won't go as far as i possibly can, i just need another mm or so. so if you could tell me in general what is safe, that would be awesome.

Use 4 LEDs, and have a resistor for each LED (4 resisitors).
