Starting a PSX Portable Build...
I would like to know if anyone else has ever succesfully made a portable PSX not the PSone but the original PS. I am willing to try a couple things I have in mind and will be documenting everything I do for future references if I am succesful. Feel free to join me on this exploration of console modding while I learn, this will be my first ever console hardmod. Any helpful tips before I get to far in would be wonderful.

Re: Starting a PSX Portable Build...
Making a PS1 portable shouldn't be too hard.
You can get rid of that big power board by using a PTH08080WAZ or PTH08000WAH(?) And wiring it like so:

Wiring the screen shouldn't be hard, and I don't know about the controller.
Good luck

Are the 5 pins on the left the ones that come from the power supply board? If so I will look into that, I am thinking of mounting the disk lens assembly on the back what do you think of that?

Re: Starting a PSX Portable Build...
Ok, I ordered some free PTH08000W Series DC/DC Switching converters as mentioned
(I ordered the following: PTH08000WAS PTH08000WAH PTH08000WAZ ) The only one that isnt backordered is the PTH08000WAH
What I need to know is if this will work, I seem to be unable to find the exact stats on any of these DC converters. The ones that are backordered wont be available until July 7th 2010, and I want to get most of this done before then.

Try to mount the disk drive inside; looks cooler.

Cool, thanks Blaze for answering and argelfraster, I needed to know if these would work so I didnt fry my MB. BTW do you have any experience connecting these converters? if so Can you draw up a sketch on where the cords go? I will be uploading pics of my current work... I have the disk assembly mounted on the back of the motherboard and I am currently assembling the controller...

I plan on vacum forming a case and using a dremel to flush the cover. the Drive will be outside the case just enough so I can put the game in with a safety cushion and adding a hinge with a plexiglass cover...argelfraster wrote:Try to mount the disk drive inside; looks cooler.

This image tells you how to wire this up to an N64, but its the same concept. (The PTH chip is in the middle and has a giant capacitor on it).

Re: Starting a PSX Portable Build...
has there ever been a portable with both a built in controller and an external wireless controller? or any wireless controller at all? I figured out how to wire mine up as it doesnt require any special setup, so I am willing to give this a try if no one has done this before I could setup a tutorial on how to do it.

Re: Starting a PSX Portable Build...
I don't think there have been any with a wireless controller, it seems kind of pointless. Many portables have a second controller port rather.

Re: Starting a PSX Portable Build...
I am thinking of using the wireless so I have less rewiring to do. Also the wireless is PS2 so it might not work... they are the only analog controllers I have (yes it is a set of two) If the first one works I will wire up the second as the reciever is a two in one reciever.

Re: Starting a PSX Portable Build...
if it works on your ps2 then it should work on your ps1, wireless wouldn't save much wiring as you still need to connect the receiver to the port, which will be the same number of pins as controller to port. however it could make it easier in terms of managing wires throughout the case.

Re: Starting a PSX Portable Build...
Managing the wires in the case was what I was thinking about, I tested the controllers (without soldering them in, because my soldering iron bit the dust today!) and they worked fine, I was even able to connect both wireless controllers, overall the receiver is 1" by .75" so it saves me a little bit of space... I completely removed the plastic from the controller ports leaving just the curcuit board and earlier today (before my iron died) I soldered on a memory card right to it so now the whole assembly (i am including the receiver even though its not soldered in yet will be:
The max hight of the assembly is 1/8" tops
Code: Select all

Re: Starting a PSX Portable Build...
What wattage would you suggest for a soldering iron to replace the one I have now,
RadioShack Soldering Iron Search Page 2
the 15, 25, 30, or 40 Watt?
