Noisy PS2 Drive Tray

Post by impossiblescissors »

I took apart my fat PS2 today trying to pinpoint the source of the problems I've been having with the drive tray. It's slow and noisy, but I don't see any place where there might be parts catching on each other. (It probably doesn't help that I have knocked the PS2 over a few times.)

I'm posting a few photos in hopes that if I have missed something, one of the forum's experts might be able to spot it. If the problem is common, what are the potential causes?

If nobody can spot any possible problems, I will probably just lubricate the drive motor assembly and call it good. Any suggestions on which lubes are safe and where they should be applied? Will I need to disassemble any further to lubricate the motor?

Thanks for your help.

I finally got around to putting the PS2 back together today. A bit of WD-40 on the gears and slide tube for the drive tray mechanism seems to have done the trick. I think I loosened the two screws for the slide tube, which may cause unintended problems later but seems to have helped for now.
