Open up the turntable, look for any capacitors, read their values, and order new ones with the same values and voltage ratings. When the new caps come in the mail, take out the old capacitors and solder in the new ones. Pretty easy to do if you know how to solder and desolder. If you get some audio-grade capacitors (not electrolytics) like these (Dayton polypropylene capacitors from Parts-Express, my personal favorite for their good price-performance ratio), you'll likely notice an improvement in sound in addition to probably eliminating that hum.

I've got my Optimus LX5 bookshelf speakers on my desk powered by a Pioneer VSX-D508 which is fed optical from either my Mac Mini or PS2. I've also got my gigantic floorstanding speakers I built myself. If only I could figure out a way to have *those* on my desk...but I digress. My music is all ripped in ALAC (I would use FLAC, but ALAC is compatible with my iPod) from CDs or downloaded from the iTunes store. I try to buy CDs rather than buy from the iTunes store.

I listen to old and new hard rock primarily. Some bands off the top of my head: Metallica, Judas Priest, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Foreigner, Godsmack, Disturbed, Ozzy, Lacuna Coil, Divide the Day, Drowning Pool, AC/DC, some Nine Inch Nails, and a bunch more.

And at the moment I don't know how to solder... But considering it usually takes him a few years to get around to doing things around the house, I' have plenty of time to learn.
Seriously. There was talk of building a deck for our pool, around the time we first starting putting it together. We've now had the pool for almost 4 years. No deck. But he's still planning on building one, as his sons slowly start going off to college...

They're useful for really big headphones that draw a lot of power. It gives them the power they need to be loud and saves on the battery life of your source.

If it's a loud humming sound, it's definitely the electrolytic capacitors. If you replace those, and the sound is still faint, you need to start replacing the paper filter capacitors. I just finished recapping my RCA 8x542 yesterday, and I'm recapping an Admiral clock radio and a Magic-Tone 504 (whiskey bottle radio) today.

Ask on the antique radio forums (antiqueradios.com) if you need help with the turntable; they're very helpful, and helped me figure out what the problem was with my first radio that I recapped when it stopped powering on. If you don't fix it, I might be willing to buy it.

I think I may have answered a question I have had for a while. For months, the tinypnes mobo has been humming whenever text appears on the screen. I remember scraping the side of one of the capacitors with a pen knife, so maybe if I replace it the humming will cease.

So I've decided that once I fix this turntable, the first album I will buy is The Killer's Sawdust. I haven't heard all the songs yet, but all the ones I have are great. The Abbey Road version of Sam's Town is especially awesome. Thanks for all the tips on how to fix it and such.
