I found my dad's old turntable (that's a record player, for the uneducated among us) in the attic a few days ago. So I brought it down and hooked it up to our 40-year-old Sony speaker system we've been using for as long as I can remember. He told us where his box of albums was, in the coat closet, and it sounds great. I'm actually listening to the radio right now though, and my sofa is vibrating. It's really not extremely loud right now, I just have the bass turned up. So, what do you guys listen to?

In the moment i like Matisyahu or Madness. I think PuddleOfMudd and Offspring rock too. Supertones have some nice songs.

Hmmm... I don't think I've heard of any of those people. I like The Killers, Wolfmother, Linkin Park, and classic rock like Aerosmith, The Who... Bands like that. But I actually meant what kind of sound systems do other people have.

Right now I have a Marantz 2230 running into a set of old Sanyo speakers, with an old turntable combo running into the aux port. (It's amplified within the combo, so I need to find a good standalone soon) I have a pair of Technics speakers holding up some countertop that I use as a desk for this computer, so I will probably swap them out soon, or use them as remotes. In the garage we have a nice Technics reciever, running through some old Marantz speakers. (Some of the best sounding speakers I have ever heard) They are busted though, with the foam ring that goes around the actual speakers being torn. (Can't wait to fix it and run it through my marantz)

what music or what formats do we listen to?

I'll post both

for formats I listen to vinyl records, shellac records, 8 tracks, cassettes, occasionally cds, and even less, mp3s.

As you can tell I am a die hard analog junkie. My stereo setup is a pioneer pl-516 turntable, a pioneer sx-300 receiver, a channel master 8 track player, and for cds, I use my pioneer laserdisc player (yeah, that's right, I collect LDs). I do not have a good vintage tape deck right now so I just use my old Panasonic boombox or my walkman.

now for the music I like. I'll have to list them in different genres because I listen to tons of music.

oh, and smitty, a lot of newer bands are releasing their stuff on vinyl. You mentioned linkin park beinf one of the bands you liked. I'm pretty sure that hybrid theory and meteora were released on vinyl, so you should really look into buying new records as well as listening to older ones.

Coheed and Cambria is my favorite band, and I usually listen to them over and over. I don't really listen to music a lot of the time. The reason I didn't go to MGC was because I already had tickets to a Coheed and Cambria concert.

Yeah, I too listen to a lotta stuff (tho, I'm primarily a metal head)....If you copy themadhacker's list and remove Korn, the red hot chili peppers and then add old classical musics (like Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, ect), toss in some Jazz and big band musics, and add in old-school country artists like David Allen Coe & Patsy Cline to the list you'd get my music load...oh, and I also enjoy the occasional Polka

And you can't forget my rockin' all Realistic stereo--SA-2001 amp, #31-1978 EQ, LAB-400 Turntable, 2x Mach 1 & 2x Mach 2 Speakers. All but the mach 2 speakers were made in 1978, the mach 2's were made in 1983 I believe.

I'll have to look into that, if my dad can get the turntable in better condition. It's having a major hum issue today, before it was just one speaker, but now it's both, so I can't just shift the balance to make it disappear. If he gets it working again someday, I'll buy some new albums.

If it's a hum in the speakers, it could just be that your table isn't being grounded right. Is there a 3rd wire on the audio connetors that isn't hooked to anything?

The ground wire is connected, which helps, but all the wires are very rusty. My dad says he'll clean them later. So I'll have to wait..
