Will the 360 run without a disk drive plugged in?
Title says it all.
Re: Will the 360 run without a disk drive plugged in?
Well, I know you can't run any installed games, because they require the dvd to be present. You probably shouldn't connect to Xbox live, because I think MS has a system that detects different hardware (or unattached). But... yes.

It will run, the power light will continuously flash(as if it is being ejected), as this is how i have to run my X360 due to overheating issues, I only play 1vs100 on it so its not a huge problem and does work on xbox live, but still it could be banned if it is that would be unfair and stink would be kicked up if I do get banned for this, as I'm not doing anything illegal just had to stop the crappy thing overheating, ill post a picture a little later. Lots of duct tape is involved xD
My monstrosity, though unless it breaks I'm not gonna tidy it up,

Re: Will the 360 run without a disk drive plugged in?
I think im going to make an ultra thin 360 laptop or 360 slim that just plays games of the the HDD or with external disk drive hook up.
Re: Will the 360 run without a disk drive plugged in?
well to run games you would have to modify the software/hard drive, and therefore run the risk of being banned from Live if you choose to use it.weaver wrote:I think im going to make an ultra thin 360 laptop or 360 slim that just plays games of the the HDD or with external disk drive hook up.

No. Xbox Live Arcade Games are ok. I don't know if you need a Live connection to start them.Goldy wrote:well to run games you would have to modify the software/hard drive, and therefore run the risk of being banned from Live if you choose to use it.weaver wrote:I think im going to make an ultra thin 360 laptop or 360 slim that just plays games of the the HDD or with external disk drive hook up.
But back to weaver: you can't use an external disk drive. It doesn't work like that. There are various methods built in to prevent that.

No I meant Im going to use the original 360 hard drive(but external) and download games on demand from xbox live.

Just be aware that MS might have a detection system that can detect missing DVD drives and may ban you (and the console) for it.weaver wrote:No I meant Im going to use the original 360 hard drive(but external) and download games on demand from xbox live.

Re: Will the 360 run without a disk drive plugged in?
What i suggest is converting the dvd drive to a fliptop type (psone style) drive, meaning you can remove all the casing and plastic from the dvd drive and use just the control board and the laser and motor chassis, I guess if you really don't want the disk drive you could just use the control board. If it would run like that

Ya I was thinking about modifing the disk drive to make it slimmer.
