Sam's Back with a PSone Portable in the works

Well people i decided to keep the project on hold over christmas so no updates yet. But expect a big update in the next few days. Hopefully i can get this thing finished soon as i've got two other portables planned for this year!

Honestly, only minimal planning on paper went in to this. I had a good idea as to what everything was going to look like in my mind, months before i even started the project. From there i've just changed the design i've progressed on.

Update!! Got quite abit of work done over the last week or so. Getting really close to getting this thing finished now. As it stands now the system is now playable, games boot-up and run etc. And everything is working fine. Just need to add a few more things then i'm going to call it finished. Apologies for some of the crap pictures, my fluorescent desk light makes the camera's auto focus mess up sometimes. I need to get some better lighting!

Added the wooden corner supports so that the back part of the case can be screwed on.



Ignore the bottom ones i didn't need to use these.



Just showing how the back part sits on the supports. One smaller triangle, then a bigger triangle on top of that.



Front and back sandwiches together nicely. Kept all the wiring nice and neat. Not much room between the PSone board the batteries but they don't touch by a matter of millimeters...Phew!





I extended the CD Drive Laser and drive motor wires. Its posible to solder directly to the orange ribbon cable. (providing you remove the white plastic bits) I used Ultra DMA IDE cable. That stuff with the tiny single core wires. Its abit fragile you just have to be careful. Couldn't be bothered to try and find a extention so i just soldered it. Worked first time!









Added a DC in port so i can power the system with a modified PSone AC adaptor. Kind of an after thought really. The top tamiya connector is the DC input, bottom is for the battery charger.



So heres how the whole system looks now. I've still yet to sort out the d-pad and buttons. To the bottom left of the lable is a blue power LED, but its not wired up yet.















It works!













What i've yet to do:

-Cut the side panels out, spray them
-Install the speakers and volume controls
-Add an headphone socket

No, I'm just going to leave the cd drive exposed. Like ben did on his first psone portable.

Its un-LED modded (CCFL backlight) the way it was ment to be! Its using RGB video.

Ok, apologies yet again for inconsistent updates! I keep drifting off doing other stuff and leaving this thing unfinished. I will finish this portable!

Anyway, I've got the top panel done with the speakers installed and wired up. Also wired up the front blue power LED. I still need to wire up the volume controls and add the tact switches. I decided to leave to headphone port out for now. I will get some pictures up within the next day.

Right now i don't have decent camera to take any pics. Only an ancient Kodak DC3200 with no auto focus! (the camera that i use for projects is my dads and i can only use it when he is not )

Picture Update!

Here's how it looks as of now. Got the volume control switches wired up. (The little circuit board with the two tact switches hanging out the side) The action buttons on the right side, i was going add the triangle, circle, square and x buttons from a PSone controller on top of the tact switches. But i messed up the triangle when i was cutting the hole so the button will not fit. (See picture below) So i'm going leave the tact switches as they are. The two buttons further down are the Start and Select buttons. I've uploaded these pictures at 800x600 rather than the useual 640x480.

All the electronics are done. Everything is working as it should. All thats to do now is get the rest of the side panels done!
