May we guess who you are? :P

If you want to go with C++, start with C, because it's easier and C++ builds off it.

As for software, you can write code in Notepad or Simpletext, and I'm sure there's free compilers for practically any language. Microsoft BASIC (quickbasic) is simple and powerful, however outdated it is. Google around for "qbasic". (I'll host it on bicostp.tk once I remember my password.)

Agreed. QBasic was the very first programming language I learned in college, and a good starting point for programmers. It is a DOS programming language, so don't expect graphics that are TOO fancy...

But I did get everyone going at school by making every machine flash "ERROR" in BIG RED LETTERS all at the same time!

That tells how to get it, offers it fior download, and tells how to use it.

I've got Quickbasic 4.5 handy, maybe 7.1 if I dig around on my old machine. (Basically the same as 4.5 but with more libraries.)

I would recommend one of these kinds of books to start learning: XYZ for dummies and Sam's teach yourself XYZ in 24 hours.

I'll be honest with you - I would have never guessed that.

Back when I started in with this I had to program on a TI 99/4A. I had to hook it up with a tape player to save, and mess around with line numbers. QuickBasic does not really need line numbers, thankfully. I wrote an entire DOS-esque OS on it once, but I lost the tape. :(

That's why they invented REM statements.
