New idea for my portable
Ok. My idea is to have the mobo and batteries in a backpack, shaped about like a book. That way it could fit in about any backpack. Then have a cable go to a "controller" with 3.5 in screen. The handheld would be lighter, slimmer, and (in my opinion) more portable.
What do you think? Good idea, bad idea, or just not really your cup of tea?
here's a rough (rough) drawing. (those are the measurements im hoping for, not precise)

Re: New idea for my portable
Its a good idea if you want to carry around the mobo and batteries everywhere you go.
Personally I like it, and if you can't build it, I'll gladly do it for you

Hmmm interesting, this means you could make the handheld much smaller. Not only that but you could also use the batteries for more then just the n64 because they are external.

It's kind of like the WVI that technott did, but much easier and smaller. Plus it doesn't need to be wireless because you can easily have a small wire going to it. Or you could put wireless in it anyways.
(no wireless n64 controller though.

maybe you should make this into a more bacteria style approach for a multi console thing with the button leads/ground/video/audio going through the cable to the console itself with the controller and console mobo so you can make more if you wanted.

Re: New idea for my portable
Well you'd have to have a very large header to accommodate all the types of controls for the systems that would work with this. (n64, snes, nes, genesis, gamecube, all the battery powered ones, you get it)
Re: New idea for my portable
Ill def think about other consoles (what started this project was the fact i was bored and they had an n64 at goowill for $8!!!)
Other than that I pretty much already carry my backpack on me everywhere (that's what they do to you in college
) so the idea would work for me, and i got a lot of electrical engineering friends that i could ask for help. I was gonna really try to focus on the handheld parts case especially. I know that the shop I work in (mechanical engineering) has a lot of metalworking stuff, they build custom pieces all the time, I figured i could layout some cad drawings and try my hand at a fully custom case.
As for batteries, my screen eats 110 mah at 7.4 v so i planned on putting 4-5000 mahs worth of battery in it, probably nicd (once again because i wouldnt have to carry it in my hands).
all in all (not counting manhours) the portable should cost somewhere between $130 to $175, depending on how I manage for the electrical components.
Thanks for the feedback!

Re: New idea for my portable
I would suggest a larger screen while you're at it.
Psone screen would be great. And if you used 4 Polymer Li-ion batteries you could get like 9000 mah which would last a long time.

Whats the power consumption for the ps1 screen modded? (just curious)
because i figured i could live with the 3.5 if it was a lot more energy friendly.
heres the screen i plan to use
(its the #2 from this post)

Re: New idea for my portable
The psone screen draws around 700 normally. But you can make the board smaller and shrink it to 400mA by led modding it.
Re: New idea for my portable
Yeah, I think for the size I'm wanting the controller to be 5 might be a little big.
