The original name in the manga was just Dragonball....when the show was animated, The post king-piccy time portion of manga was given a Z to discern it from the earlier eps since the 2nd part was so much different from the original (namely in it's spacey/ultra power/somewhat darker story).

GT was all right for the most part, but when compared to what it came from, it was pretty bad.......Plus, you can't forget the fact that technically, the GT story couldn't have happened anyway.
