If it's a 3rd gen, don't jailbreak it. They only have a tethered jailbreak for that version. Meaning you have to connect is to your PC, in order to shut it off or restart it.

It will take that long probably. They have been saying since September 2009 that they will release a untethered jailbreak "in the next few week". Over 3 months later and they still haven't released it.
